What about grabbing the knife at the unsharpen side? What i mean is a crocodil mouth like technique..... ohhweah, hope that makes sense
maraming salamat at palaam, Mike
Are you saying you believe that you can "pinch down" on someone's knife, and that will work?
If that's what you mean, that isn't going to work.
Just think about it.
A knife wielding attacker is confident. He's just going to twist the knife and push forward into you, or yank it back and then continue cutting the piss out of you.
You have to grab MUCH firmer than with an "alligator" type grab. And, personally, I'd suggest no less than BOTH hands on his weapon arm.
A determined knife wielding attacker is nothing like a guy in class with a dummy knife. Different motives, different mindsets, different realities altogether.
Better than "take a gun to a knife fight" : don't go to the knife fight at all. Stay home, call a ladyfriend, and do something worthwhile.
I agree what you say and i'm sure that grabbing the knife never works. It was just something what i pick up last years of training in filipino martial arts.....
I think it works, when it is done in a blind panic and quickly followed up. But this is an instinct, and not something to train, I don't think.
It is just something that happens.
Better to get both arms controlling that weapon arm, and break it/headbutt/knee/takedown
That's my guess.
Best answer: avoid places where people pull out knives and get "stabby".
Don't start altercations, let things slide. And in the words of my old wrestling coach "If they can't take 'I don't want to fight' for an answer, and beat on you anyway, then brother, Let Him Have It."
He was a confused old jerk, but he sure had that part right.
What about grabbing the knife at the unsharpen side? ... Mike
Better than wraping your fingers on it but not to forget this is one passing moment in a dynamic and deadly "game". What do you do to set up this clamshell grip on the blade? And what do you do once you have it? not to hold it but twist it or push it away. To safely pass the sharp pointy and deliver WHAT? Do you have a knife too? Disarms, Disarms, Disarms! Every "THING" we do should have logical realistic and valid (read SOUND) REASONING behind it! To save your life you might need to end his. A way to hold your enemies blade is not enough. You need to take it, break it or kill him trying...
I'm sure some folks know that the armlocks in all their variety are a good way to controll or destroy an apendage. Getting it quickly and BLASTING the joint or bone is a sure disarm. Go try it!
Watch that he's not "monkey" trapped, humans tend to switch the weapon to the other hand if you trap one of them. Unless they get in that OODA loop and you actually get the weapon away it's a danger to have the lock where he can reach it with his opposite hand... That's why "real" jujutsu teaches control of both arms! Compound attacks are too cool.
Easy as a defang to cut/smash/ blast his weapon hand.... and less risk of injury if you have a weapon too (improvised or other)
The first "disarm" I learned was just a hard slap/hit to a hand or wrist to knock the weapon out of his hand. It can work and it's easy! Next is to hit or cut the hand with a weapon of your own... then on to passing, leverage, locking and disarms by force or destruction...Triangles, figure four's wrist locks that use both hands against one... all good for disarming.
Keeper I got to say this. You can grab a stick. But block the incoming attack first. Then maybe try and grab it. You also have to be in range Medio or corto. If you are not in range you will fail. Plus you are using a stick not a blade. Now don't always think you can grab the stick. That is why we have the tapik. Your truth is not everyone's else's truth.Hope this helps.
