Filipino Kali, also called Escrima or Arnis de Mano, teaches realistic knife combat prinicples that can also be applied to unarmed combat.

Second the above post. I'm only familiar with Pekiti Tirsia Kali, but my impresion is that filipino systems generally are pretty good.

I recomend you re-post this in the 'Filipino' forum on this page - some of those guys can give some really good advice.

Learn first aid and how to treat shock, buy bandaids and gause, some tape and super glue. You'll want gloves and eyeprotection and you should start with a training knife. Live steel tends to scare the new guys.

Hint: Dehydrated (instant) mashed potatoes will act as a coagulant if you're prone to bleeding...

Or you could use a stick instead of a knife.

        Check this out?

          Defend empty hands against knife???

          How about track and field?
I'd like to see anyone try and take a knife away from somebody who's really trying to put them under and not get cut.
Best bet is to learn something like sayoc or pekiti and pray that you can manuever the cutting and poking edges of the weapon away from your vital bits before finding an opening to run your ass off.

Play around with friends if you want an example...buy a training knife and try to get it away from them...or better yet, and much cheaper...use a magic marker, you will soon realize that knives are pretty hard to take away or defend against.

Now imagine those lines and dots on whatever clothing items you've now rendered useless as slashes and thrusts opening up your body.

Really visualize this. Take a breath in, close your eyes, breathe out...
imagine pictures in medical books of open cadavers...imagine the surgery channel...your First aide and EMT training if you've had any.

A cut to an artery will probably pulse blood out of your body...every spurt in rythm with your heart beat...warm and nasueating...imagine blacking out due to shock and panic, and right before that, the queazy feeling you get in your stomach when you start to calm down after freaking out at the asshole that cut you off in traffic.

A cut/puncture to the Lung...gasping for air and not being able to fill your lungs. Sucking chest wound...can't remember the terms for it, one for when blood fills your lungs and one when outside air gets trapped.

To the abdomen...we've all seen the three of nine sample from the sayoc kali site where he explains the blue worm...if not, it's too much detail for me to go into....

          anyway...my point is...

          KNIVES ARE VERY VERY BAD...
(and running with them can be hazardous.)
if you see a knife...run...if you can't run, fight until running becomes an option or you've miraculously wrested the weapon away and the assailant is no longer a threat. (i.e. habeas corpus) lye, desert....shovel...etc. I kid I kid.

Just like I may be a social drinker...but I smoke crack like a motherfucker.

Knife fight is described in one word. Unpredictable.

The best defense against a knife is a gun.

A quick draw or a counter ambush.

lol. I forgot who said it, but its not miraculous to wrestle a knife from some one, not easy, but without a doubt not miraculous. Some one with a knife focuses only on the knife, and once you have their hand, wrist, or have that hand with the knife in anyway, their plans suddenly dont work so well. But it is true, running IS your best bet, just saying its not quite as impossible as you might think it is.

FMA is perfect. Some schools also teach stickgrappling, so you get the best of both worlds.

Or use weapons that defeat it...

The new HK MP-7 Personal Defence Weapon for example. It shoots a 4.6 mm. 24.7 gr. copper jacketed steel projectile at 2370 fps. It seems fairly obvious what the designers had in mind.
