Originally posted by HikagePlease excuse my bluntness, but you know nothing of knife fighting. You may be fine against the average knife wielding drunk, but if you were to encounter a pro, based on your response, he'd carve you up like a Thanksgiving turkey.

Ya think? I've met a number of "pro's" and they have been nothing but kind and polite. Why would they want to carve on me?
Have you ever played with a karambit? Does a wrist lock work against a reverse grip?
Will you even see a knife before you're bleeding? No.
Do I know a pro can switch weapon hands or fight with two? ( I know nothing) You're right, a stupid assed armbar would never work against that guy....

Sad to say but the head instructors out of Canada have taught some wierd crap to lots of folks that swear by it. It's crap of the worst kind but don't tell them...
You might drop in on the Bullshido dot net forum and read up?
I'll look for the source I had in mind...

Tant1,
I am not familiear with the people you mentioned in Canada, I definately don;t doubt that there are people coming up with some wierd stuff but I can tell you from being a student in Both Krav Maga and Haganah, I have Never been fed that kinda nonsense. Yes I have been to bushido. net, don;t see what it has to do with me and alot of style bashing there.
Have to remember that in the world of martial arts, there are always people claiming to be trained in one style or another and make outragious claims. Most don;t know what they are talking about. Heck, I have heard so called martial artists claim they can throw a knife and it could go around corners and stab the guy around the corner. As dumb as it sounds coming from this joker, i don;t use it to judge an entire system, only the idiot claiming to be a master of it

A good book on the subject
There's a good book I have on knife defense called " The Naked Edge " by Steve Tarani. Told me everything I needed to know about edge weapon defense. Real good points. Real scientific. Simple and direct. I liked it. And I would have to agree setting a new record for you highschool's 400 meter dash would be your best bet against an extremly agressive armed opponent. Or a good arm and a brick or a decent sized rock. Do wonders if you hit your oponent in the head. (if you don't like your current cell phone and you can throw really hard without cocking your arm, they work too)

knife defense from Tarini the weannie.... useless. Keep the book on hand, maybe you can throw it at an attacker, that'll work better than anything in the book.

dude telling someone to move away at a 45 degree angel is the same if it comes from a pussy or from whomever your knife defense "god" is. I also train knife defense with a 3rd degree black belt in twin dragon kempo. The scientific fundamentals of knife defense are the same from a book or from your teacher. Basics are basics. Tarani does a good job of simply ilustrating the basics in his book. All I'm saying.

Maybe he copied the info correctly in whatever book he wrote
but you be better off with no training than whats on that tape.
There is nothing more 3 dimensional than a knife fight, good luck understanding it from a 2 dimensional book. The book also cant correct you, neither can a tape but at least you can see motion and angles.
does tarani still advocate holding the empty hand palm inward and 3 inches from your nose, over your eyes and nose looking between the fingers? He says you will get cut anyway, so its important to protect your throat and eyes... then he has you hold your knife behind you at your waist chambered...this so effectively kills your ability to move its sickening.

the book is completly focused on empty hand defenses against a knife attack so I can't tell you what he advocates on actual knife use. I've found in knife fight training keeping the knife in your rear hand is an effective way against keeping your oppent from isolating your weapon arm. If it's knife to knife I like to keep the knife in my lead hand half way out there. I love snaping out a front kick to the bottem of my oppents knife hand before I attack too. Some of his techniques in the book are a little bogus but thats present in almost every martial arts book or dvd/video you buy. Just remember you gotta read it/ watch it all take the good stuff outta it and move on.

Its just a small extremly fast kick if they have the knife way out there and are dicking around trying to be scary. It's worked in training for me, i've kicked the knives out or peoples hands before with it. But it's not a move I'm going to try if someone is just barrling at me trying to stab me. I'm talking about ME having a knife too and they're just waving theres around in front of them trying to be all cool. All i can say is in training with my partners it's worked. Just a no-cock hacky sac style tip of the tow kick right to the bottem of their wrist. Not a close quarters in the hussle death match move but one if the other guy is being a dueche.
