  • Online books; Jungle Patrol/ Swish of the Kris

    check these out

go down to the historical features section, and you'll find "Jungle Patrol" by Vic Hurley about the Philippine Constabulary.

one down and you'll find "Swish of the Kris" also by Vic Hurley, about the Moro's.

There's a lot of GREAT info on this site, cultural and historical articles...seminar and artist profiles...newspaper articles related to the FMA.

    Cool site.

      I'm thinking about some of these;

Sacrifice and Sharing in the Philippine Highlands: Religion and Society Among the Buhid of Mindoro
      by Thomas P. Gibson (Hardcover)

On the Road to Tribal Extinction: Depopulation, Deculturation, and Adaptative Well-Being Among the Batak of the Philippines
      by James F. Eder (Paperback)

      Ilongot Life and Legends
      by L. Wilson
      (out of print)

Ilongot Headhunting, 1883-1974: A Study in Society and History
      by Renato Rosaldo (Paperback)

Itneg (Tinguian) Justice and Conflict Resolution
      by Fay L Dumagat

Kalingas, Their Institutions and Custom Law
      by Roy R. Barton

The Kalinga of Northern Luzon, Philippines
      by Edward P. Dozier

      The Bontoc Igorot
      by Albert Ernest Jenks (Paperback)

Epic Tales of the Philippines: Tribal Lores of Filipinos : Tribal Lores of Filipinos
      by Artemio R. Guillermo (Paperback) {this looks really cool}

      Tribal Splendor: Liping Dingal
      by Ramon Ma Zaragoza

Form and Splendor : Personal Adornment of Northern Luzon Ethnic Groups, Philippines
      by Roberto Maramba

      The Last Filipino Head Hunters
by David Howard (Paperback - September 2001)
(I'm buying this for damn sure!!!)

Ethnic Groups of Insular Southeast Asia: Philippines and Formosa
by Frank M. Lebar (Editor) (Hardcover)

ALONG with a variety of text books on the FMA, I think it would be cool to further study the hisoriography of the whole of southeast asia, India down through Thailand, Maylasia, the Philippines, and Indonesia...and maybe new guinnea through to even Australia (pre-colonization) as to learn more about the arts and the indigenous peoples that originally developed them.

Most of these books will have some useful information.
I have about half of them in my library.

You will not regret purchasing THE LAST FILIPINO HEAD HUNTERS
by David Howard - the book is packed with excellent photography as well.

Another is PYGMIES AND DREAM GIANTS by Stewart. It is rare but has some info that complements these.

SWISH OF THE KRIS is excellent reading, although Hurley's phrase about the Spanish using "the cross and sword" has been inaccurately interpreted that as the Spanish primarily using their swordsmanship skills rather than the 'sword' to mean warfare. Spain at that time used the pike, crossbow and arquebus/cannon for warfare.

or he could have meant "cross" as an alegory to Catholocism.
but, yeah...i've been checking out some of the stuff out there, and that "last headhunter" book looks great.

            I agree.
'Cross' meant to stand for the use of religion, and 'Sword' for warfare.
It makes more sense rather than taking it literally.
