One's knife grip can affect how one fights.. it can even affect one's fighting mindset. I usually hold and use the knife the usual way. I can do more that way. How's your grip?

Yeah, grip's REALLY important, i find if its too tight the tip turns purple So i go back to the usual way because i can do more that way. My grip's fine though, thanks fer askin

BTW, what the hell is the usual way???? do you mean sabre grip? If you have an Al Mar warrior then the usual grip would probably be reverse grip, OR if youre in a hollywood slasher flick, thats also reverse style, also known as the mcdojo stab. Now if ya have a bowie you might be in hammer grip (when you oughta be in sabre). See "usual" doesnt tell us much, perhaps you "usually" grip it wrong?

Wrong grip? If the tip turns purple.. that's wrong indeed.
"Usual" here means not "reverse" grip. Do you know what "reverse" means? The one you called the McDojo stab.
"Usual" also means the grip assailants "usually" use in instances of real knife attacks.

Well other than reverse grip there are sabre, hammer, live thumb, per/sev and pinch grip without getting too specific...oh yeah better not forget pikal, you usually encounter that one in certain regions of the world.

Perhaps i wasnt clear.... the movies show the mcdojo stab. Drawpoint or pikal methods are my favorite. But then thats not how people usually hold their knife, MOST people grip it WRONG, they hold it like a hammer...since you didnt specify it seems you are probably in hammer grip

and how do YOU usually hold your knife when knifefighting?

Pakal not pikal... pikal means knocked-kneed. The only people here who use that grip are the "matanseros".. those who slaughter pigs.

With the thumb folded over as though gripping a hammer as opposed to hiding it behind the guard.

I find that when I ues reverse grip or ice pick grip for better illiustration- I get better combos in sparring. I can set up better positions for locks. My guess is that others Ispar w/ get too confident that I may have to pull away since they get closer in the relation between myself and blade.

If an attacker entered my home, and i was alone and was had to fight him, i would hold my knife in the stabbing grip or icepick(i dont know the knife lingo), but is it better to just hold it the normal way?

it would depend on the weapon you chose and the training you had

the normal guy with a normal knife with the normal amount of training and normal grip, can expect normal results.

Someone with a specialized knife and training will also get normal results...
