My thoughts exactly. I love watching MMA...I have the deepest respect for the fighters as athletes. However, I personally feel that Filipinos (esp those back home) need to get back in touch with their FMA roots.

Most of the best FMA guys in the Philippines teach at the park and in their backyards, which I love. However, it seems to me that the FMAs haven't found the same commercial mainstream success as MMA, Karate, and Tae Kwon Do have. I find it splendid (as well as ironic) that FMAs have been more popular overseas than they are back in the motherland. However, it would just be nice to see the FMAs enjoy the same popularity in the Philippines as Tae Kwon Do is in Korea, or Judo is in Japan.

      Just my opinion.

      God Bless,
      Mike

Umm of course we love FMA more than we love all other arts, I would have posted this at the MMA thread but since it's Philippine related I thought it was okay to post it here since everyone is mature enough to understand this. "Mahal namin ang sariling amin"

We already have movies promoting stick and knife fighting such as Ronnie Rickets and Lito Lapid movies.

Huge network corporations such as ABS-CBN couldn't be convinced to show full contact stick fighting as this will not be allowed by our local government and MTRCB (Media Censorship Authority) due to its brutal nature for young televiewers, so we are working to add it on our next project which involves minimal gear to avoid that "pillow fight" image on actual stick fighting. Mabuhay! and peace to you all.

I understand totally...all respect intended. But please keep note that I was simply agreeing with lionleo's statement, which stated:

It's from my experience that the FMAs are not as popular in the Philippines as foreign arts are. This isn't just my opinion...it's something that's been going on for a long time. Decades ago, Okinawan, Japanese, and Korean martial arts were considered "en vogue" and native Filipino arts were often deemed as out of style. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with foreign systems...not at all. All I'm saying is that it would be nice to see some FMAs given the same attention, that's all.

I actually bought that movie in Baguio this past summer. It's good to see that FMAs are getting more representation in the film industry.

With all due respect, if a full-contact stickfighting match is considered too violent, then why is it that the news networks in the PI show such graphic images on TV all the time (corpses in landslides, stab victims with icepicks sticking out of their abdomens, etc.)? I'm not saying this to point fingers...I just find it strange. I saw a lot of those graphic images on TV during my last trip there.

It would be cool to see an FMA reality show in the PI. You are right saying that pillow-fight type stickfighting as you say will be a bore to watch for many viewers. As a suggestion, perhaps the show could focus on the Filipino blade arts. The competitions could involve challenges and contests in sword sparring (with fake swords of course), target knife throwing, etc. After all, the Filipino arts are essentially blade arts. Sword sparring could follow a point-fighting type system, but because the fake swords represent bolos or swords, one clean shot is considered a point. It probably won't be considered too violent for younger viewers, and the drama that may take place between the competitors would make for some great TV. Filipinos always seem to be competitive with one another lol.

It's just an idea...I would love to see the FMAs being promoted as blade arts, not just stick arts, in the Philippines.

              God Bless,
              Mike

No beef here bro, I was just also making a point. =) And yes you're right local news has indeed became entertainment whether be ABS-CBN-2 or GMA-7. The more blood, the more gore, the more controversy.. the more ratings

It's represented as public service so I guess that's why the censorship tolerates it. And yes, majority of the local people prefers "imported" stuff rather than their own... sad but true. Peace.

                      Link changed.

admittedly..these is a good medium to introduce MMA as a mainstream entertainment, all i watch is boxing and MMA-it's a good addition to see Pinoy's in MMA...

It's also a sad fact that FMA is not as popular as the mainstream MA styles, when is was still in the PI..it was totally impossible for FMA groups to be goverened by one body, i guess this is what made it quite difficult...

my two cents will be to make FMA the official and only combatives i n the Pinoy Military..sticks, knife, empty hand FMA(Dumog-yaw-yan-jendo), i guess this will help and make FMA mainstream...again Just my two cents.

Filipino Military and Police Personnel Don't Know MMA

No offense, but I really cannot understand why the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and other adjunct military and police entities STILL teach Karate in their academies.

Why don't they teach these people MMA?

Also, the only FMA which these entities teach is Arnis...tapos sobrang basic pa at iisang style lang: Modern Arnis. Again, no offense.

Sana they should teach MMA and advanced FMA to Filipino military and police personnel. Kawawa naman...most of these guys don't even know what Kali Ilustrisimo or Sayoc Kali is. Daig pa sila ng mga foreigners na CIVILIAN.

"Kidlat Arnis" sounds interesting! Too bad the link you have posted is NOT working.

Where could I possibly check out that style in Metro Manila? Are there local instructors or training venues here? What "more ancient" styles is it (i.e., Kidlat Arnis) comprised of and/or derived from?
