I haven't concluded anything other than that knife work is serious business.
One thing FMAs do have that is head and shoulders above the rest is their training methodology. It would be interesting to see how other arts would fare after actually training their material in a fashion similiar to what FMAs.
I've seen some FMA's that were stylish and seemed more like a dance. And then I've seen some that are very intense and economize motion and are hardcore combatives. I hope that no one here is under the impression that all FMA are top notch and cutting edge(no pun intended).
Most people here haven't seen knife fights for a reason: They don't last long if either guy knows what he's doing. Fights are not like what people see in the movies. Edge weapon fights only last long if one person is running.
But all in all medic06 made a strong argument. Any time you put yourself in harm's way its a crap shoot, not just with weapons. But in all honesty there are schools that produce better fighters than others. If you tend to try and reproduce classical movements from your art in their entirety then you are an artists. If you tend to use the concepts from your art to create a direct method and don't cling to any set pattern but learn to flow, you've become a fighter. Its art vs guerrilla tactics.
If you've ever seen a man use guerrilla tactics while wielding a blade, I will bet the fight didn't last even 10 seconds. No man that I know who's ever trained in combatives pulls his blade unless he's going to use it. And once he does, unless you're as good, either it lights out or track meet time.

do you suppose a majority of these gang members would leave the average guy alone as long as he wasnt looking for trouble?
Where they stabbed in the back? That's not a knife fight, that's an assassination . . . .

I've seen you write good stuff before. You're not a complete loser like jubaji. So don't act like it, even on occasion.

Originally posted by Uke View PostI can believe it. The blade is a big part of the Filipino culture. If I were to believe that someone saw two skilled men going at it for real with blades, it would be there. I wouldn't believe it if you said it happened any other place though. Anything is possible though however improbable.
