  • Stickfighting at the park in the SW Houston area, 3/4/2007

The Houston Stick Fighting Association will be at it again for the 1st of quarterly scheduled combative events featuring martial artists of all "stick-based" fighting styles. Matches are fought with various sorts of martial art weaponry from the Filipino rattan sticks, wooden/rubber training dagger duels, wooden sword and dagger, staff, wooden longswords in series of "friendly exchanges" betwen players. This is a FULL-CONTACT event featuring members of this organization going at it where there are no judges, no trophies, no winners, or losers. This is not a tournament. Just a group of guys crazy enough to fight with martial arts weapons from the Oriental martial arts to the Western/European(& Rennaisance era) weapons systems.

The event will begin at 9 am in the morning at Oyster Creek Park off of highway 6 South between Dulles Ave and Settlers Way. Matches go on until the afternoon and there will also be a BBQ cookout to add to the occasion.

We'll be gathering near the white gazebo as pictured here:

Here's one of the sample clips of the 1st Houston Stick Fighting Association gatherings held last November 26, 2006 at Hermann Park. Video courtesy of Leo Quitalon's Kali-Kilat group in Sugarland promoting the work of the kids in his group.
Paul Aguihap is the wearing the red "matress" in this video and is one of the top fighters from their group. I like this kid and his enthusiasm in his matches.

Our friends at Kombat Sports Limited (KIL) sent me some goodies to give away at our event this Sunday. This is shaping up to be a great event.

Leo's Kali Kilat group holds training sessions there at the park where we will be playing at this Sunday, so I hope we won't have any problems with the cops stopping us from playing.

                        HA HA HA!!!

We've had that happen before. Some of my regulars are officers so it gets smoothed over quickly and we're back to "playing"...with a new audience.

Thanks for posting the clips guys!
