              You should have been there!

Today at the stickfighting meet, I fought this time with a cane. The walking stick with a crook handle. I opted not to wear the WEKAF gear and instead, I wore only hockey gloves and fencing mask for protective gear. It may be daring, but I also made sure that my awareness level was at top level to avoid any real hard and heavy shots. As a result, I only received one real heavy shot(from my best recollection) from a 1 & 1/8" thick live rattan stick on the back of my left shoulder which swelled up in a welt that I will probably be feeling for a day or two along with a few other hits that tagged me good on my body and headgear in one match with Trace Moore. A FMA student under Dog Brother, Alvis "Hound Dog" Solis of Humble, Texas.

My other match with the live stick and minimal gear was just as fun as the last match with Trace. This time in a match with HSFA president, Johnathan Bolton. I did get hit once(maybe a couple more times) in the hand. It was a very clean shot. I also got hit more around my body and headgear, but the stick was not as thick as Trace's, so it was nothing to worry about as much when it came to feeling any real pain as I would have felt from Trace's monster stick. I even switched stick-hands throughout the match from left to right hand and vice-versa for both matches.

My warm-up match was with the padded "Actionflex" sticks with Johntahan B. where we only wore a fencing mask. Those Actionflex sticks don't hurt at all so it felt more to me like a pillowfight though I tried to remain tactical as possible. I try not to use those padded sticks too much or else I would probably become complacent and too comfortable and then I might take my awareness for granted especially when I refuse to wear too much padding when I spar. Though I still won't rule out ever using them for training on certain occasions, just not all the time. I believe it would breed unwanted habits.

I would have had more matches had I showed up on time, but due to traffic troubles(car wreck on the road on the way to the park), I and my training partner, Jenny did not make it on time and that was disappointing enough. The few matches that I did have..... 'did their part in relieving myself from the frustration of being late and I guess that was good enough.

There were other matches fought with other weapons besides plain rattan sticks though. Bill Little from Beaumont Texas also has an active background in the Western MA with the long and short swords, shield & buckler. There were even some matches fought with staff versus sword and sticks along with numerous training-dagger dueling matches with the rest of the participants including 65 year old Manong Joe Galleon who fought more than his fair share of matches.

I did watch one match with Bill and Johnathan where Bill fought with the longsword trainer and Johnathan with the short sword and buckler. Bill did chop a heavy one down on the buckler which dented it hard as a result made Johnathan drop the thing. It was a cool match though I still got tickled at the buckler getting bent out of shape.

Lightning Eskrima instructor, Leo Quitalon and his student Jared Maier of Sugarland, Texas ruled the BBQ pits when it came time to eat. They made sure everyone was fed well. From steaks, chiken, sausages, and even potato salad. The food was excellent!

I am eagerly looking forward to the next meet in the next quarter... when it will be all nice and sunny and warm....

It was another great time this Sunday had by all. We had a good turnout representing various styles and schools of FMA, followed by a great BBQ lunch prepared by our friends at Kali-Kilat Houston. We also had in attendance Alvis "Hound Dog" Solis who was there to support his students that were participating.

One of my most memorable matches of the day was with Daniel Arola and his cane. (NOTE: Beware of a Filipino with any type of stick in his hand, including a cane!) Within the first 30 seconds of our match I felt the tip of Daniel's cane strke through my thin street hockey gloves after Daniel delivered a redondo with his left hand to my right. About a minute later, Daniel caught the outside of my right knee with what seemed to be a glancing blow, but still hurts this morning! Finally, I learned not to try to put my hand in the way of Daniel's # 2 backhand strike since the tip of my finger is now an interesting shade of purple!

My other memorable match was with Bill from Beaumont. We took out the Western Longsword versus a short sword and shield. Bill started with the Longsword and proceeded to bend my shield in half with a strong blow in our first match. In our second match, we switched roles with me weilding the Longsword. I was able to disarm Bill of his shield and then pick it up for myself as I used the shield while weilding the Longsword with two hands (dos manos). All in all it was a fun time with friends.

I am looking forward to our second quarter event for 2007 which will probably be on the beach in Galveston fighting on the sand and in the water. Stay tuned!

HSFA meet from "Kali-kilat " perspective

(sorry for the capitalization-this is origanally for my website....)

THE 1ST QUARTER MEET FOR THE HOUSTON STICK FIGHTING ASSOCIATION
                      BY: LEO QUILATON
                      (KALI-KILAT- HTTP://KIDLATARNIS.TRIPOD.COM)
                      MARCH 5,2007

"KALI-KILAT" HOSTED THE FIRST EVENT FOR H.S.F.A. THIS YEAR. IT WAS HELD AT LOST CREEK PARK IN SOUTHWEST HOUSTON.

THE EVENT TURN OUT WAS GOOD AS EXPECTED , BOTH FOR THE PARTICIPANTS AS WELL AS FOR THE OBSERVERS.

MANY FAMILIAR FACES IN THE SOUTHWEST AREA WERE THERE TO OBSERVE AND WATCH HOW THE H.S.F.A. HOLDS THIS EVENT. AND AS FAR AS REACTION IS CONCERENED, ALL WERE POSITIVE.

WE WERE GRACED BY THE ATTENDANCE OF ALVIS"HOUND DOG "SOLIS (WWW.SOLISMARTIALARTS.COM). ROBERT MONIFAR OF EXCELL KARATE WAS THERE ALSO (WWW.EXCELLKARATE.COM). THE GYS FROM BEUMONT TEXAS, BILL, JOHN AND DANIEL ALSO DROVE TWO HOURS TO BE A PART OF THIS MEET. OF COURSE DANIEL AROLA OF DAMAG INC., JOE GALLEON , ISIAS GINSON AND JONATHAN BOLTON OF HOUSTON MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY AND THE BRAINS BEHIND THIS ASSOCIATION WERE THERE AND READY TO RUMBLE.

MY FIRST FIGHT WAS WITH A SINGLE SMAK STICK TREATED AS A SINGLE BLADE - WITH ISIAS GINSON. IT WAS A GOOD FIGHT SINCE BOTH OF US RESPECTED THE FACT THAT THIS WAS NOT MERELY A STICK THAT WE CAN SWAGGER AROUND BUT AN ACTUAL METAPHOR FOR A BLADE. WITH THIS MINDSET , OUR STRIKES WERE MORE CALCULATED AND EFFECTIVE TARGETTING WAS PRECISELY ADOPTED FOR ACTUAL MAXIMUM REALITY SIMULATION.

MY SECOND BOUT WAS WITH A "SOLIS-M.A STUDENT" UNDER ALVIS "HOUND DOG" SOLIS. THIS GUY WAS MOVINHG TO AND FRO, MAKING ME REALIZE THAT ACTUAL MOVEMENT IN A BLADE FIGHT WOULD REALLY MATTER IF YOU ARE AGAINST A TRAINED FIGHTER, NOT JUST A STREET THUG. BLADE FIGHTERS/STICK FIGHTERS HAS A CERTAIN BODY ANGLING THAT A N UNTRAINED INDIVIDUAL DONT HAVE..IT'S A BODY SWAGGER THAT ONLY TRAINED INDIVIDUALS CAN NOTICE. JUST LIKE KNOWING A KICKER FROM JUST ONE WHO WHO KICKS.

I ALSO FOUGHT TWO BLADE WEILD WITH ANOTHER SOLIS FIGHTER..A BIG GUY WHOSE STRIKES WERE AS LETHAL AS I EXPECTED EVEN WITH PADDED SMAK STICKS.

I ALSO FOUGHT JONATHAN BOLTON WITH A LONG BROADSWORD WHICH I TREATED AS KAMPILAN, WITH HIM HOLDING A SHIELD AND A SHORTER SWORD, UNFORTUNATELY MY LONG PADDED SWORD BENT SO I SWITCHED TO WHAT HE HAS, BOTH THE SHIELD AND THE SHORT SWORD WHILE HE WEILDED TWO PADDED STICKS. I COULD NOT BE AS EFFECTIVE WITH A HEAVY WEAPON IN ONE HAND COMPARED TO HIS LIGHT AND FAST TWO PADDED STICKS. ALL I COULD DO WAS THRUST WHILE HE RELEASED A SALVO OF SINAWALI STRIKES. ONCE AGAIN PROVING THAT HEAVY WEAPONS CAN AS MUCH BE HANDLED LESS EFFECTIVELY AGAINST TWO LIGHTER WEAPONS IN A SIMULATED COMBAT ENVIRONMENT.

MY LAST BOUT WAS WITH BILL FROM BEAUMONT TEXAS, IT WAS SINGLE KNIFE AGAINST SINGLE KNIFE, IT WAS ONE OF MY BEST BOUTS EVER, SINCE BOTH OF US TREATED IT AS IT WAS, A KNIFE FIGHT THAT CAN END OUR LIVES , IT WAS ONE HELL OF AN ADRENALINE RUSH WHEN YOU REALISE THAT A KNIFE FIGHT IS AS DANGEROUS AS IT SOUNDS. THE TRAINING WE HAD KICKED IN WITH THE ACTUAL USE OF THE ALIVE HAND IN BOTH STRIKE AND COUNTER OFFENSIVE STRIKES..THANKS BILL FOR THAT GREAT FIGHT.

IT WILL BE A DISGRACE IF I WONT MENTION MY GROUPS EFFORTS AS WELL. IRA CONCEPTION AND GREG WHEELER OF "TATSULOK COMBAT CONCEPTS"(WWW.COMBAT-CONCEPTS.COM) ALSO DID A GOOD JOB WITH HANDLING THEIR FIGHTS. IT WAS JUST SO ENCOURAGING TO SEE THEM BOTH GROW IN THIS ART AS MY PERSONAL STUDENTS.

PAUL AGUIHAP ALSO FOUGHT A GOOD ROUND WITH JONATHAN BOLTON IN THE PADDED SINGLE STICK DIVISION EVEN WHEN HE WAS HAVING AN ASTHMA ATTACK.

SAM GARCIA ALSO DID A TREMENDOUS OVERALL GROWTH IN HIS FIGHTS. WE ARE ALL LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT MEET AND HOPEFULLY PARTICIPATE IN MORE BOUTS THAN THIS ONE......

WHY? BECAUSE "KALI-KILAT" HOSTED THE MEET WITH MEAT!

AND I MEAN GOOD BARBECUE. IT WAS ALL MY GROUPS EFFORTS TO PULL RESOURCES TOGETHER AND TRY TO FEED THE PARTICIPANTS AND OBSERVERS WITH GOOD OLD FILIPINO BARBECUEING...WE HAD PORK, CHICKEN AND BEEF RIBS..AND I DO NOT WANT TO FAIL TO MENTION JARED MEIR'S BEST BEER-BRATS. JARED WAS NOT ABLE TO FIGHT SINCE GREG FRACTURED ONE OF HIS THUMB IN ONE OF OUR PRACTICE SESSIONS..BUT IT WAS A BLESSING IN DISGUISE SINCE HE DID GOOD WITH HIS BEER-BRATS...THANKS JARED.

AS DANNY SUGGESTED, THE NEXT EVENT WILL BE HELD IN A BEACH. THAT WAS HOW I STARTED MY TRAINING IN OZAMIS CITY..WHERE WE TRAINED IN THE SAND..AND BOY IT IS THE HARDEST PLACE TO PLANT BOTH YOUR FEET.

WE ARE ALL LOOKING FORWARD TO IT AND WE HOPE THAT ALL THOSE OBSERVERS WILL NOT JUST BE OBSERVING THE NEXT TIME BUT WILL ACTUALLY PARTICIPATE......

                      TILL NEXT MEET MY BROTHERS!

                      MABUHAY TAYONG LAHAT.

The rest of us usually use the standard 7/8" to 1" by 28" rattan bastons.

I'm not quite sure exactly how thick Johnathan's stick was but in my other match with Trace, he had a stick that was 1 & 1/8" thick. I took a heavy one of his caveman shots on the shoulder and was feelin it for quite a few days.
