  • Many Filipinos in America began training with Greg Alland

Because there's more to the Philippine Arts and Sciences then stick fighting, many Filipinos growing up in American find that there is more to the art then learning to fight with sticks. As a matter of fact according to Grand Master Canete, there is no such thing as Filipino stick fighting. It's origin is originally a bladed art, too bloody for Americans and the rest of the world, so to make it popular the Filipino introduced stick fighting competition. And, this too is dangerous and in my classes each individual signs a waiver stating, "up to and including death". In fact there have been some fights with real rattan, not the lightweight stuff found in America that have ended in a death, although they weren't death matches. So we continue to train with the heavy stuff imported from the Philippines. If you want to know more, visit us in many schools that continue to train with heavy rattan approximately 2" in diamater and see what it's all about.

Incidentally, I usually don't charge Filipino students, because this is their culture, and traditionally money was never exchanged for training and beside, asowako ang Filipina. Even Great Grand Master Dan Inosanto trained indirectly with me from our early video that contained the original 64 attacks of Pekiti Tirsia and the revered Doce Pares system of espada Y dage, Dan purchased them all in 1987. So, why not come and see for yourself, rather then listen to the hot air expressed by some that couldn't do the training it requires to develop their own skill. There are those that know and those that will never know, because it's not easy to take the material and make it your own!

With 34 years at practice and now 61, I continue to train and do the practice I've done since 1972 when I first met my teacher fresh from the Philippines. And if you want more, join one of our programs we have introduced a Kali Silat FIVE DAY programs and it's the only Instructor Guru program of it's kind, a great success we now in our 5th year. Sorry but just because you taught a handful of Filipinos does not mean anything. What exactly is your point with this thread? I find it amusing when non-Pinoys use the claim that they teach Filipino's or better yet, teach FMA in the Philippines. Filipino's or any other cultures for that matter, do not need a foreigner to teach them THEIR art IN their homeland.

Now before anyone takes my comment as racial, think again? I have trained with non-Pinoy instructors in my early years and found them exceptional at what they do. I am merely speaking about the practitioners who feel they need to make superior claims. I find the B.S. culturally insensitive. I have seen this moreso within FMA circles.

I don't think this type of advertising is common within the other Eastern & Western combat arts. Please feel free to share some examples, if you can cite them.

Actually I should have pointed out that my comment made about teaching the arts back home were not directed at him but brought up because of the similar nature. There have been non-Pinoys claiming this and I think it is insulting to make such claims. Like there aren't any instructors back home teaching. I tend to believe that people making these statements were likely to have been invited to join their instructors to assist and experience training in the PI. However, I've seen and heard it said differently as if THEY were there to teach the art. IMO...a BIG difference!

It seems to me that there's an inner motive about attracting more Filipino-born students by not charging them, and that if he's known to have the most Filipino students in his class as a white man, then his school "MUST BE" one of the best there is..... right?

OK... now before I get 'branded' completely as the bad guy by Alland supporters, I still have to hand it to the man for his devotion in promoting FMA with those 20 episodes of Kali-Silat TV he's produced in the late 80s. That's one thing I admit I have in common with the man. Hey, promotion is promotion and even though I still think he's a fruitcake, that's besides the point. He's been in Kali since I was born 34.5 years ago. So let it be seen here, that before anyone decides to judge any further, here is a clip for your viewing pleasure. It's 31 mins long so I hope you can last long enough to sit through it all.

              Google it, Mike.

I actually like this one. It's also got Tom Bisio in a demo with GT Leo Gaje Jr featured....

Putting aside what I think about Mr Alland as an individual, my professional input does give mega-kudos for the effort he invested in sharing FMA throughout the world.
