  • Vee Arnis Jitsu "David James"

I have a quick question what is everyone impression of Vee arnis and David James program? I am not far and always pass by there Flatbush Dojo and always peek in. I have a few years of Muay Thai experience and work with a WW2 combative group here in NYC, but I hear so many mixed impression about there system so I figured I would ask on this forum. I heard it is a mix of Muay Thai, Arnis and Jujitsu. Does anyone know how much Muay Thai is incorporated into there system. Some told me his V-boxing class is a Tae bo and others told me it is a real Muay Thai class anyone have experience in the system. People on Hock's forum say he does not deserve to be in the top 10 knife people in some magazine that was published. Other say that they step into there punches which is not effective while others say it produces more power. I am just curious on some of your opinions....

Best way to find out is to go to his class and try it out. You will get different opinions from others. We have had people come in and try our classes out and have stayed for years and some have gone else where.
It really depends on what you are looking for in the class and in the instructor.

I plan too, but I thought I would get some feedback first before I go check it out I hate the whole sales pitch when visiting a dojo lol so I figure i would ask first

Vee Arnis Jitsu & David James.

I know Guru James, and have worked with the late Grand Master Vee here and there, and did a little Cable presentation in 1977, after meeting him in 1974. I'm certain you'll have a very good experience and of course the only way is to join the class to find out, give my regards to Guru James.

Periodically I have a class in Chinatown in Columbus Park Bayard and Mulberry Streets 8:am to 11:am. And of course I always invite everyone to participate, I'll be there the month of October every weekend, we have a great time, and enjoy some dim sum Chinese meal after. If you'd like to be on our email list, why not send me a note to MasGuru@KaliSilat.org regards, P. Greg Alland, with about 34 years in Kali Silat, we continue to learn, sharing the art we all continue to grow.

I know of VAJ and have seen their workouts since my old school (BJJ under Marcos Santos) was first located on the floor above them (at Hardcore Muscle) and later on was located at their back room. I have heard opinions from both sides of the fence. I dunno if he is one of the top ten knife people in the world, I doubt it. But the classes that i did see were NOT taebo. I saw a healthy dose of realism. I found all the VAJ students and instructors to be humble and respectful.

Well, David James learned from a legend in FMA and reality SD. Professor Vee was highly regarded for his street approach to combat and self defense on the East Coast. David is Prof. Vee's heir apparent and has been recognized by many organizations as an excellent teacher of knife tactics, such as the Top 10 Knife People in the world article, and as Instructor of the Year by FMA Digest. Recognition like that is no coincidence.

Doubting is just that: Doubt. Go get on the mat with him and find out for yourself why his school is the largest adult school on the East Coast without him advertising. Word of mouth is a powerful tool once you've left a powerful impression.

I'd also like to say that Prof. James is teaching what Prof. Vee taught him and keeps it unadulterated. Vee was recognized and respected in the very best circles of FMA and combatives, so it stands to reason that his successor wouldn't fall far from the tree.

After watching him teach a class it is hard to not recognize his ability to teach or fight.

why any person could question if he is a top teacher or not is crazy. especially a person who is extremely mcdojo FMA to put down david james. must be jealousy.

so my question, what will determined if somebody is a top teacher in knife fighting? the fact that you teach knife fifhgitng? or have a lot of students? are we talking about the "coolest" teachniques, tricks and ideas? or are we judging this by fighting ability?

the vee arnis people, most of them, is known for their skill. not rank, not endorsiments, not by how many people are certfieid under them--just skill. you cant argue with that. that is what i like about prof vee people--not much politics and arguing. if they got skill, or not. if you want to see what styles have the LESSED skill, see how much arguing and fighting they do. chances are, there's more to argue about because no one is talking about fightning ability, so they have to argue about: who is the succcessor, who deserved their rank, who has the "true" art, does the teacher have a real history or not.

Haven't we all seen too much of this before in the FMA!

                        Prof James.

My experience is primarily with the folks at the Defense Institute i.e Sensei John Patrone and Eric Lalone of Vee Arnis Jitsu in Colorado Springs, IMHO you would be hard pressed to find a more disciplined, harder hitting and street oriented system. The art is sound, and technically accurate, their people are outstanding practitioners, instructors are solid and great bunch of guys, and very very intense. check it out, Ive only trained with the professor during two smeinars he did there at their academy but that was 3 years ago, and im still hurtin from jus the workout

                        good luck,

I've heard this before also. I read a review of Prof. James videos where the reviewer mentioned that the Prof. has over 600 students. My concern is that when I visit their website it seems that he only offers classes on mondays, tuesdays and wednesdays.

How many people are in those classes? 75, 100+ per class???
