many people practice there arnis skill for the drills, and what i call "showing off skills", without treating the stick as a WEAPON. okay, the drills give "attibutes", "reflex", endurance, blah blah blah. but how about power? how about destructive skills? how much time you are doing to develop the skill and the knowledge of how to use this stick to permanently injure a man, or to kill him? you will need more than just to know, if i hit him in the head, the stick will break it and brain damaged.
this is the difference between eskrima and arnis, and combat eskrima and arnis, or as i call it, fighting eskrima/arnis. even FMA from the philippines, if it is not taught right, is worthless as a fighting art in combat.
sparring skill can help with this, but sparring skill alone is not the key. there must be a combination of sparring skill (your opponent is not going to use your styles numbering system, and most likely he's not going to have a stick at all), destructive power, striking power, and knowledge and practice.
your training should give you an opportunity to test your ability to destroy, and how to develop this style of fighting.
and you will need the right way of thinking as a fighter.
