  • Pad training

    Hi,

Last week, I tried using some old taped up focus mitts to feed the knife. Never trained this before, but thought it might be a good way for the newer knife player to learn how to move with the knife.

Worked pretty good... I just fed different angles with the pads and had the trainee react with a corresponding attack.

How many of you "guys" make use of pads to train different weapons?

Tips and comments would be appreciated!

we use focus mitts for daga and stick and daga training, we use thai pads for stick and double stick. but you have to have a good feeder/training partner.

Hi Harley, could you describe a little what kind of drills you use? Always looking for faster ways of getting comfortable with the knife. I've used focus mitts for jab reflex with the stick. Thanks.

        Hey guys,
sure Chad, let's see if i can talk you through an example.
this first feed is for a double redondo and thrust.
the feeder holds lead mitt in flat palm up position and other mitt up in typical cross position, the reciever then double redondos the flat mitt and immediately thrust the other mitt. does that make any sense? the object is to make quick sharp redondos with min. motion and roll right into your thurst on the other mitt. speed and acuracy are stressed.
        next feed,
it is based on the four count half crus, or half cross, which is a backhand out, slash down, slash up, retract, and backhand witik again. got it, ok
so the feeder holds the first mitt in a sideways or hook position, the second is flat again. so you backhand slash the first mitt, slash down on the second mitt, up into the first mitt (now facing up, this can also be a thrust) and retract, then out again with a backhand slash to the "hook" mitt.
like all focus mitt training this helps "focus" accuracy, distance, etc. the feeder is still moving, and can attack back to make the student defend or move. focus mitts are very valuable training tools, in the old days the filipinos used sticks instead of mitts. still same training method.
i hate trying to explain tech here because it's hard to understand but hope it helps.
if ya got it let me know and i'll try to explain a thai pad drill with double stick.

Is the second set one that is commonly used in PT? I gotcha on the drills, I thought you guys were doing something different. Worked someone with it, and liked their progression last night. Thanks and Take Care.

Feeding the mitts as targets seemed almost too easy at first, and I was thinking to myself, "what is this guy learning from this, anybody can do this", but then I realized how easy it really is. I really like tutsar style of knife fighting in long range, and this can really emphasize the flicking and defanging the snake. Huh, train smarter. Having my grandfather feed the sticks and use the sticks as focus mitts to work the stick jab while the other stick swings for the hand to make sure you are retracting quickly brings back memories. I haven't had one of those backyard midnight training sessions in a long time. Have to set one up this weekend. Laters.
