  • hammer vs eastern matial arts weaponry

This doesn't necesarily apply to just filippino martial arts, but rather all weapon arts. I personally believe that the majority of eastern weapons, ie bo staff, sais, nunchucks escrima sticks etc etc are a great deal more inefective and inpracticle than a simple hand hammer bought from a hardware store for less than ten quid. Not only that, but you can get away with having a hammer in your car if you say it's for work, as it's primarily a tool. However, a set of nunchucks or sais is obvious that the only use for them is as a weapon.

Hit someone with a hammer and u will do shed loads of damage. You don't even need any specific training or high degree of skil either. Compare this to kali sticks and nunchucks and you will see how the hammer is superior.

I'm confidant that if you put me witha hammer against someone with nunchucks or sticks, who trains to use the, i would win with the hammer.

The point of this thread is that if you aree going to reach for a weapon, look no further than the simple, effective and LEGAL hammer and ditch all this eastern artsy crap that is both ineffective, inadaquate and ilegal to carry.

You just make such wonderful points. I can't wait for your next dissertation on the ancient art of garden tools.

I'll state the obvious. Anyone who practices FMA can fight with anything he/she has on hand, especially a hammer.

Improvised weaponry is nothing new to anyone here, so you might want to move your post to another forum if you want to get a rise out of someone.

FYI, I already keep a hammer by my bedside, next to my machete.

          Offensive Weapon

"The definition of an offensive weapon is any article made or adapted for use for causing injury to the person, or intended by the person having it with him for such use by him, or by some other person. (N.B. this definition includes a disguised knife).

"It is an offence to have in your possession an offensive weapon in a public place."

Which means that a hammer may also fall into the category of an offensive weapon if carried in your car with you. If it is kept in the boot [trunk], that is another matter, and may indeed be acceptable. Once you get out of your vehicle to get your hammer from the boot (assuming you have the time), it becomes an offensive weapon as soon as you brandish it, let alone use it against another person.

What if you take off your boot and use it as a hammer?

Haven't seen it posted here yet, but I use a cane. I actually have a bad knee, but Its never so bad as to where I actually NEED a cane, its just my style. Anyway I train in Hanbojutsu, and can use the cane well. Obviously its perfectly legal, and I can definitely get the job done. Maybe better than finding excuses to have a hammer hanging from my belt everyday! lol no offense. =)

The boot from your car, or the one from your foot?

                    Assault is a felony (when...???)

What if you whack someone over the head with a pistol instead of shooting them? ADW is ADW...

Unless it's manslaughter or attempted murder...

                    Any old "hammer" will do...

how about a spearheaded shovel. basicly a fixed bayonet. you can do a driveby with your hammer(hammer thrown at 35mph + car traveling ad 65 mph= a hard lick) then do a ninja roll out of the car as you pass sending the car toward the hammer-stunned enemy then banzai charge with your shovel.

I think it must be hard fighting in those big parachute pants.

                          Jones,

It would be interesting to see the number of people killed with hammers. My guess is that it's much higher than the number of people killed by exotic weapons. This leads me to a key idea of mine, the concept of "real" weapons, versus weapons that are only seen in a training hall.

The hammer also has the advantage of being able to hook an opponent's weapon.

A bit of advice that most people don't think of. In modern cars with automatic windows. If your car loses power (say if it gets submerged. You can not roll down your window. If say your car get submerged and the doors won't open because of accident or obstruction you are trapped. Same in an accident. You should always have a hammer and knife handy to smash a window or cut a seat belt. Also they used to sell mini clubs with tire checker printed right on it. But I think the hammer for windows would be easier to sell to a jury.

                              WI Kali Group,

Interesting take on the hammer. I've seen knives sold with a special end designed to shatter a window. And the serrated edge of the Spyderco folding knife is particularly handy for law enforcement who have to cut seatbelts to extricate people from vehicles.

I think there is a lot to be said for real world tools that serve as weapons and vice versa.
