Is “KALI” appropriate to describe an indigenous blade based Filipino Martial Arts? See Post by Stixx

The term Kali was the brain storm of one influencial person.

Made up by someone that was interested in promoting the Philippine Martial Arts when I was introduced to the term in the early 70's I questioned it's validity, since Kali was the Indian goddess of violence. But it didn't matter, the term stuck. See the post by Stixx. Any way this is what happened, in the early 70's when I was given the term Kali and recently I found that it was not really appropriate. But, since the term was used it stuck with the information that today is just plain unreal. It is now asserted that there is no footwork attached to the practices of this Philippine Art and Science in Pekiti Tirsia. To complicate it, now Pekiti Tirsia consists of only 5 attacks, this was not really the case, as the original 64 attacks of the system involved many more drills. Now on DVD video produced in my later years, and from many other systems we see many more drills and of course footwork, and the body mechanics for speed and power.

Combining with the aspects of a simple principle, "Can I stop you, or can you stop me no matter what!" As was taught by Grand Master Tortal, Sr., instructor in Dekiti Tirsia that later became Pekiti Tirsia in the 70's where the principles of even the Espada y Daga drills are included, along with the many other drills from different systems. So again I stress visiting the Philippines where you really will have a greater understanding of what this Philippine Art and Science is about.

Later we had actually discarded some of the drills in this case as redundant, since Espada Y Daga is learned as a drill then used as a finishing tool, like any of the skills with a variety of weaponry, because The Philippine Martial Art is not a fighting skill, but a finishing skill! That is to say, when you master the many drills of any Philippine System like our SinaTirsiaWali, you combine everything into that same principle, "Can I stop you or can you stop me?" The drills' once dissolved have little meaning, in that you must make the skill your own. In that it's only the "Can I stop you?" That we are concerned with, or you stop me, "Not matters what!" As GM Tortal Sr. would say.

But from what I gained in understing at the home of Doce Pares, in that Doce Pares is in Mactan, and Macatn is the island is where ESKRIMA evolved circa 1600's when the Spanish outlawed the blades, the rattan stick was first employed. It just goes without saying that to really understand what is happening in these arts and sciences it's necessary to travel to the Philippines and get a real understanding of what I mean. I suggest Mactan's Doce Pares, including the other well known groups like the Bilintawak, because the island of Mactan is where it all began, it's the heart of eskrima. It was here that surrender was necessary to survive. "Survival" is the true meaning of these arts and sciences of the Philippine Art and Science as well as the arts and sciences of every culture, when your life is threatened do what is necessary to survive, period!

Recently both GM Tabaota & GM Preses were witness to the 181 strikes of SinaTirsiaWali and these techniques were re-discovered when Master Dennis Ocampo, Director of SinaTirsiaWali, and several of our gurus shared this at a seminar held in Maryland at the school of Apollo Ladra last year. All three instructors had a similar comment, that they never saw Sinawali like this before.

So here is where I again suggest, take the material, and all the drills you can find, dissolve the drills, replace with each weapon, and make a personal discovery for yourself as to how you do it your way, then you make it your own. Then and only then it's, "How can you stop your opponent, or they stop you!? So, when they don't know what you're going to do, because you don't know what you're going to do, you focus only on protecting yourself, since anyone with real skill can easily stop you and I. And, I witnessed this personally when I first went to Cebu in 1977 at the home of GM Canete and the Canete clan was and still is outstanding. Even today, it's like I really can't hold on to my weapon in working with these masters and grand masteres of Doce Pares and well as many Filipino Masters and Grand Masters that really know what their skill is all about.

I even remember once when GM Padoy at around the early 80's he removed my weapon and I had no idea what or how it happened. There are many, many skilled Filipino Masters and Grand Masters and fortunate for us some of them are traveling in the states and throughout the world. please see the video with GM Canete, search: Canete Interview at YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. for more, and start thinking when you can make your trip to the Philippines, now is the time, time waits for no man.
