  • The Origin of Dekiti Tirsia, begot Pekiti Tirsia begot SinaTirsiaWali.

Dekiti Tirsia, begot Pekiti Tirsia, begot SinaTirsiaWali - the truth be known, there is no other way to gain except in practice, start now and practice for the rest of your life, there's no other way.

In 1972, I was asked to be the President of Pekiti Tirsia, I refused but replied with, "Let someone else be president, I'll do what ever is necessary to promote these Filipino Martial Arts." As I was to marry a Filipina in September of that same year the teacher had good reason to ask me since I was part of the administrative team at the Jersey City Medical Center. Any way I began my training in classes with Leo Tortal Gaje, Jr., the nephew of Grand Master Jerson 'Nene' Tortal, whom I met in Bacolod City and trained with in Bago City Philippines in 1998.

It was a sad time we had when after my meeting people in Cebu City I realized that Cebu was the real heart of Eskrima, Arnis, Kali as the names have changed often because for the many Filipino that teach and train in these Philippine culture there are an equal number of names for this art and science of human life we call martial arts.

But it was in Cebu where it began, this was the place that the Spanish outlawed the carrying of blades in 1600 after the very bloody battle in Mactan. So, having been prompted by my teacher to visit Cebu, as was my duty, being a promoter back then for Leo. In June 1977 I met with 22 masters and grandmasters in Cebu City, at the famed Doce Pares Club. Including GM Tabota during this meeting I spoke about the film with Bruce Lee that introduced the double baston in the movie "Enter the Dragon" and suggested to everyone that Kali Silat was going to grow throughout the world. I recommended then, that the Filipino should get in front of the progress of these arts and sciences as they would be all over the world, and today it is so.

And from my last meeting with GM Dionisio Canete in Cebu 2008, I was told, "that of course I was not really teaching Doce Pares, but that they decided to adopt me because I was very famous." But it's not me that's famous it's the Filipino Art & Science that is now everywhere and from everyone that knows I continue, and have had lessons from every master and grand master that I met along the way. I remember on one such trip meeting the great grand master Padoy, wow de he ever tie me in knots. Anyway several years after my first meeting in Cebu I was told that those 22 masters and grand masters agreed with my suggestion and now at 63 I'm still practicing and witness to the growth of these Philippine Arts and Sciences throughout the world, regardless of what name it travels under. So I continue to enjoy training as always.

Despite the good and the bad that flows in every great culture being saddened by the death of Roland Dantes March 6, 2009, as I look to the future I recall the most important part of this training in Kali Silat, that if you train in this Philippine Culture seriously, there's one place on earth that you must go, sooner or later, and that's The Philippines. Make arrangements now, there is no better time then today.

Whether you call it Kali, Arnis, Eskrima, (as the Filipino spelling) or Escrima as the Spanish called it, or the name of your system or club, or just sinawali, what we do know is that every Filipino has a combination of weaponry from historical times in actual battle with the proficiency of two weapon techniques it clear the meaning of sinawli is to weave. Thus in calling what I do it was suggest in 1989 SinaTirsiaWali, to historically contain the beginning of my training from pekiti, meaning small, derived from dekiti* and check with the Tortal family for it's meaning to the path we now refer to as the tirsia in SinaTirsiaWali, meaning, "Do what ever is necessary to stop your opponent, do not fight, but finish! Oh, and follow the real rules in a knife fight. 1st, there are no rules, 2nd cheat, 3rd remember the first two rules.

Whatever we call it there's only one path, stay on it for the rest of your life! Go with God, in faith, practice, and serve by helping others to learn. As in any sport, start with the footwork, body mechanics, and sinawali. Even though one club I met with said they didn't have that drill, they did know it. You can only know it through practice and your visit to Mactan, and in Cebu City, the home of all the Philippine Martial Arts, you will see the truth.

Classes introduced in Bradenton-Sarasota Florida 8:00 am to 1:00 pm every Saturday G.T. Bray Park 51st Street West, in Bradenton (646) 571-4182 for details.

There is no historic record, verbal or otherwise of DTS prior to 1996.

See Edgar Sulite's book 'Masters of Kali, Arnis, Escrima [1993]' page 117 where the head of DTS calls his art as 'Pekiti-Tirsia System of Arnis'.

    See attached jpeg..

For info on real Pekiti Tirsia Kali google PT-GO.

That was given to me in the early 70's when the name was changed from Dekiti to Pekiti in America. Since people understood that pekiti meant small in Spanish, that was applied to the close quarter practices of the art in America at the time from around 1972 on. Furthermore Kali was attributed to the Filipino arts as well by the same individual and the name stuck, and was published, but never accounted for, yet Master Sulite did have a copy of that publication. "People had no understanding what was dekiti", I was told in America regarding this quote from my first teacher. I don't recall the late Master Nene ever using the name Pekiti, since the effort was accomplished by his nephew in New York, and branched out from there. I met Master Sulite in the Philippines in the 70's and have his picture during the program booklet in 79. Since I don't have the material you spoke of I am at a loss here to comment on what he said of this matter.

        per the original subject.....

I purchased the book from Edgar Sulite in the 90's. Also what about the videos that came out in the 90's (see next post) - again Pekiti Tirsia. If it changed in the 70's why no record until 1996?

I can scan the page from Edgar's book and post the link here..?

This is historical published EVIDENCE that the offshoot of Pekiti Tirsia Kali that starts with a 'D' was made up after Edgar's book (post 93).

For more info on this issue see this post by the real sole heir to Pekiti Tirsia Kali Leo Tortal Gaje Jr :

Here are a couple more :

scroll down to 'NuBreed's' post. It corroborates what I posted. I've personally never met or talked to 'NuBreed'..

          PSDTC Forum post

Also the videos that came out in the early 90's:

pre 1996 Video with GM Jerson Tortal and Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje

Here the art is called Pekiti Tirsia with GM Nene sitting right there and a Pekiti Tirsia banner on the wall behind them...

The educated person can do the research they deem necessary to come to their own conclusions.

          Thanks,

Well there is no official record of the transition, save for one phone call in 1989 after I returned from the Philippines, in a conversation with my first teacher, he questions me on what I did to those people in Cebu. I became very apologetic and replied that I didn't know. His next comment was that they were still talking about me six months later, and it was all positive. It was here that he suggested a name for what I do. And we began to discuss what we should call it. We both of us agreed on the name, "SinaTirsiaWali". May / June 1989.

I'm not talking about Sini Tirsia Wali. I'm talking about Pekiti Tirsia only.

In America? so the book written in the Philippines (Edgar's book) should have said Dekiti in 1993? Yet it clearly says Pekiti Tirsia.

Actually poquito is small is spanish.

              Nice talking to you...

Pekiti Tirsia, also became Pekiti-Tirsia, but that's another story.

Probably due to influence by Leo who traveled back to the Philippines in 1979, during the time we were established with Naraphil, I recall Edgar in the parade but on by Doce Pares, & Naraphil where Edgar was holding the booklet I produced, to identify the art. It was the outline of what was this NEW martial art going around from 1972, until now. I knew it would never stop. regards, Greg

As a final note here is what Grand Tuhon Leo T Gaje had to say about this issue.

                  --
I am requested by those who knew Pekiti-Tirsia Kali System and had practiced the system for many years. I am requested to tell the real truth about Pekiti-Tirsia and the manufactured Dekiti-Tirsia . the truth is the real Pekiti-Tirsia not the politics about Pekiti-Tirsia and the Dekiti-Tirsia.

My Grandfather , the late Grandmaster Conrado B. Tortal is the Supreme Grandmaster of the Pekiti-Tirsia Kali System originally family developed system in Negros Occidental. My Grandfather had four brothers namely Balbino Tortal , Francisco Tortal, Teodorico Tortal and Qurino Tortal who died at the ealry age. But the three brothers , namely Balbino , Teodorico and Francisco were able to reach the full manhood got married and had family. They were residing in the town of Talisay , Negros Occidental very close to the city of Bacolod. Before the 2nd World War, the Tortal family were intact with a very close net relationship based in the cultural traditions of family unit in a community. My Grandfather Conrado B. Tortal being the head of the clan managed to be respected by the big landowners of the big tract of land in Talisay that by force of circumstances he became the Administrator of the Haciendas. The brothers were then supported of his success and they were working as part of the Administration of GRandmaster Conrado B. Tortal. Balbino B. Tortal had several children namely Samuel Tortal, Segundito Tortal ,Jerson Tortal, Ditay Tortal and Melicio Tortal , the father of Rommel Tortal my second in Command in the Pekiti-Tirsia system and others were female daughters.

The late Grandmaster Conrado B. Tortal had only one daughter in the name of Feliza Garcia Tortal married to leopoldo P. Gaje, Snr. had twin kids , namley Leopoldo Tortal Gaje, jr and Luzviminda Tortal Gaje. One week old Luzviminda died. Survived by leopoldo Tortal Gaje, jr.

The other brother Francisco Tortal had two sons namely Juanito C.Tortal and Conrado C Tortal naming him to carry on the name Conrado B. Tortal a legend in the family.

Teodorico Tortal had several boys namely , Teodorico Tortal Jr. Segundito Tortal, Quirino Tortal naming the other brother that died at early age, Edd ie Tortal and Danilo Tortal.

The war in 1942 ( Japanese invasion of the Philippines with more than 200,000 Japanese distributed in many Islands made the Japanese won against the Americans in the Battle of Bataan and Corrigidor, the Filipinos continued their arm struggle by hding in the mountains and attacked the japanese by Guerilla tactics. Negros Island is one of the Islands that was closely occupied by the Japanese.

Due to rural Japanese campaign in almost every town in Negros, The late Balbino B. Tortal together with other filipinos were caught by the Japanese patrols and all of them were lined up for firing squad but the action of Balbino P. Tortal to survived and his knowledge in Pekiti-Tirsia he prepared himself to fight the Japanese . Instead to be shot the Japanese soldiers changed their mind instead of shooting not to be heard by the neighboring fiipino guerillas of the explosion, instead the use the bayonets. So this is the opportunity that Balbino Tortal was able to disengaged the rifle with a Bayonet and used it in return to the Japanese killing three of them but due to the hunger and having a limited strength , Balbino while his back was turned , the Japanese soldier use the butt of the rifle hitting him on the back of the head that he fell down and that was the end of his fight with the Japanese.

All the children of Balbino Tortal were then very young and training them was not possible since during the war , all what has been attended is how to eat and where to hide against the Japanese. At this juncture the family of Balbino were orphan and it was his eldest brother Grandmaster Conrado B. Tortal who took care of the family for food and other needs .

Since Grandmaster Conrado b. Tortal with a short cut name Ka Dadoy moved to farther place south of Bacolod City in 1944 to the barrior called Isio here he bought 10 hectacres of land as residence and another 100 hectares for farmlands.

There I grew up with my Grandfather in Isio and had the benefit of the training at the most crucial time just after the war and continued till I was in my matured years.

The truth is no other else among the family had training with Pekiti-Tirsia Kali except me as the only inheritor of the system. The secret of the system boldly guarded by my grandfather was the main theme of his preservation-Guard the Secret.

So as to the claim that Dekiti-Tirsia as a part of the Tortal family system is a hoax. It was a manufactured system to generate income riding in the name of Pekiti-Tirsia. Nene Tortal was in the Supreme Martial Arts with the combination of Karate and Arnis. It was when I was in the US that I encouraged him to bring the name of the Tortal family to the Martial Arts community so that when the foreigner comes to Negros at least he has the chance to be recognized as the Tortal family./The truth is there was no Dekiti-Tirsia. All what has been written in the web site about Dekiti-Tirsia were all copied in my writings under the Pekiti-Tirsia. Nene Tortal had been joining me in my seminars because I wanted him to learn the original Pekiti-Tirsia until in the book of Sulite he claimed under the heading Pekiti-Tirsia . Then suddenly he had a title Dekiti-Tirsia.

So the reason I am explaining this because I have been bothered by the people who are die hard FMA to know the truth . It is my responsibility to tell the real truth.,I am not going to hide what is a lie and allows people to believe it is the truth. The is the reason that separates us with Nene Tortal , the principle of Truth.

So if you believe what is the truth then stay with Pekiti-Tirsia but if you believe in the Dekiti-Tirsia then stick to it. What counts most is the stick is round and the blade is flat make your choice. It is not the system but how dip the blade can work on by the kilos. To make a comparative analysis, you study with Nene Tortal and try what you learn against pekiti-Tirsia if it works ,Dekiti-Tirsia is your choice but if it doen't work then go somewhere else maybe go and kiss FMA good by..

Ok, but just for the record the dash meaning Pekiti-Tirsia came in as a result of the dot com world, which was not registered. Since Pekiti Tirsia was the original the Pekiti dash Tirsia was the newer version, when you only get 5 attacks, and no footwork when learning today from the source. Others may have adapted the original 64 attacks which encompassed the self-development of the drills. Even creating your own way. Which was one of the necessary points in development. The ORIGINAL also included the simple, can you stop me no matter what? concept! Vital to your personal growth. regards, Greg
