In this video the French boxing president for the south says Savate comes from the "Chausson Marseiilais", which was used by sailors to defend themselves in the harbour of Marseille in the 19th century and was a very violent environment. It originally comes from the Italians of Genova, another maritime city, and the roots were in ancient Greece. Like in Thailand, they used to wrap their hands with ropes.
Before they decided to put rules and protections, there were illegal fights and bets.
