I have had a few people contact me in the last few days to advise that they missed the July 15th deadline for the early seminar price of $175.00 for the general public.

I have decided to extend the early deadline to September 1st.

    Woof!

We started both days with real contact stick fighting material focusing on occupying strikes. Saturday afternoon was devoted to Kali Tudo.

Sunday was devoted to the Kali Fence, Kali Tudo and DLO. The Shock knives came out Sunday afternoon and that was lots of fun.

The material and teaching metholodgy both appeal to me.

It was an amazing few days.

            Woof,

            Terry

Glad you enjoyed it. I trained with him about a month or so ago and it was one of the worst seminars I have ever been to. Super nice guy, but all over the place, and he seemed more interested in branding and marketing his brands then actually teaching solid stuff. Very, very disappointing! And WTF is with the video taping legality BS in the beginning??

Glad you had a good time.

"Well, I wasn't there so I can't speak to your experience but I am really surprised to hear of your experience.

"I can say that I don't understand your reaction to "the video taping legality BS in the beginning" your response strikes me as odd. Its probably because it’s a normal thing to me as its what I have been exposed to when fighting at the Gathering and also at all of the many seminars I have attended with Guro over the years. We all know what a legal jungle America can be when it comes to people suing people for any and everything, so why would it irk you that Guro Denny seeks to protect himself from the litigious jerks of the world? If he finds videoing the liability waiver the most efficient way, then what problem does that present for you?

"As far as the merit of the material goes, "Opinions are like noses, everyone has one." Most certainly you are entitled to yours, but so too is the US Army and its "Modern Army Combatives Program" which used him as its subject matter expert for its stickfighting program. So too is the Advanced Training Center for Customs & Border Protection which just brought him out for a second time to train its trainers to help their people in the field defending our borders. The list of such folks is long, and their recommendations can be found on the DBMA's military/LEO site-- which is open only to military/LEO personell because, unlike many, Guro Marc does not want to use such things for marketing in the civilian world. Of course there are also all the people that Guro Marc has trained to fight at a Dog Brothers Gathering of the Pack.
Personally for me as a martial arts instructor who is focused on Real contact stick fighting and senario based training, I endorse the material because it speaks to the student/instructor that wants to train the way he fights and to fight the way he trains. I can say though that its probably good that you recognize that the material doesn’t fit you and work for you on your path and the way you teach, to each his own and I respect your choice.

For me the DVDs serve as a working note book to the material that is being taught at the seminar; I mentioned in my previous post about the notes that I took, and as an Instructor teaching the DBMA material I find it invaluable to know which of some 20 DVDs cover the material in question, what better a reference tool could one have.? The DVDS are in my oppinion the best I have ever been exposed to in my martinal arts training and I value my DVDs just as I value my seminar notes.

Sorry you had bad time, but my experience (and this is the third time I've brought Guro Marc out to my school) is quite different. I have a fairly broad background in the martial arts (Kali,Silat, Jun Fan Gung Fu, Grappling) and I find his material fresh, ingenious, and highly practical." I like to think of Guro Dennys material as “ material that teaches you how to make Martial Arts and Crafts become Reality”.

I wanted to give you response the attention it deserves because too often folks just blow people off on
Forums so sorry for my long winded response.

                Train hard and God bless,

                Terry Crutcher

You are letting personal feelings cloud your response bro. I never said I have a problem with the material, just the way it was taught. He was all over the place. No cohesive connection. Sure a few techniques were good, but overall very disappointing from someone who has such a solid rep! I was expecting more and better. Maybe it was the host he was catering too... I don't know.

As for Marc's long bio... that does not mean shit! Just because the government hires someone to teach something does not mean it is more effective or less effective. It basically means someone signed a contract for money and is teaching it to a group. It does not enhance the validity nor decrease it.

As for the legality BS comment... brother, video, paper or otherwise is worthless once it actually goes to court. Everyone who has ever dealt with the law knows that. I just found it to be very time consuming and silly is all. But to each their own.

As for your DVD comments... not sure why you mention them but okay.

I agree the DBMA has some good stuff, that is why I went. I was just expecting more foundation and less marketing is all. Every man needs to eat, but renaming things cute little doggie names to fit a brand is a bit egocentric for me.

Again my experience is just once, and the seminar was surely geared for the host who wanted certain things. If Marc comes back and works just some plain ol' Kali I would venture out and try it again. If it is his DLO / KT stuff... I think I will pass.

                  Cheers
                  Jake

For the sake of clarity I post your comments in red.
"As for Marc's long bio... that does not mean shit! Just because the government hires someone to teach something does not mean it is more effective or less effective. It basically means someone signed a contract for money and is teaching it to a group. It does not enhance the validity nor decrease it."

My point was simply that he was” brought back” by people who train the people who are responsible for “dealing with” large numbers of “bad guys”, usually outnumbered while in lonely places. It is up to you what you make of it. As for me i am believer in the material.

"As for the legality BS comment... brother, video, paper or otherwise is worthless once it actually goes to court. Everyone who has ever dealt with the law knows that. I just found it to be very time consuming and silly is all. But to each their own."

Guro Marc is a graduate of Columbia Law School and a member of the bar of Washington DC.
From our conversations I know that he has put considerable thought into how to be an instructor in some of the most physical martial arts out there without being exposed to personal liability within the American legal environment. Having repeadely seen this in the seminars he has done for me, here is what I believe he accomplishes with the legal liability disclaimer:

                    a) he establishes that he is operating as a corporation-- thus his home and personal assets are not at stake
                    b) he establishes a choice of California law (yes this can be done); having researched the law he knows that CA law is very favorable to enforcing legal liability waivers when it comes to "dangerous activities"
                    c) he establishes the "no suing no one for no reason" riff
                    d) by videoing it no one can come back and claim they didn't know what they were signing.

Like many people, I think the doggie names are fun, funny and they help make the material easy to remember. I especially find this true for some of the mnemonic devices. Since you were recently training the Kali Tudo ® material you may recognize the mnemonic device- Dracula brings the Stake, Hammer, and Cross®. Not only is it fun you can see the road map the device presents when you understand the material being taught. You don't like it, I get it and thats what civil discussion is about. I agree with you "to each his own". Sorry you didn't care for his presentation. I do. Its OK.
I will leave you with the last word on this matter.

                    Train hard, God bless,
                    Terry

Again I have nothing personal against Marc or anyone else for that matter. I was just disappointed at what I got for what I paid! Again, I think he has some great stuff, I just did not see it at the seminar I attended! I guess I am more interested in the plain ol' Kali, and less so in the more "modern" stuff (for lack of a better term).

I have heard he will be back, and if the time and money fit I will give it another go. Super nice cat, OOPS, dog ! I loved the stories and the personality.
                      Cheers
