  • Escrima Knife Fighting Secret to Learning Weapons Simultaneously

Escrima Knife Fighting is known for its intensive use of weapons at the onset of training. The most common weapon combinations in Escrima Knife Fighting are double sticks or doble baston, espada y daga or sword and dagger, single stick or solo baston, knife or balaraw and empty hand or kuntao.

Most of the observations throughout Escrima Knife Fighting is the distinction between training with doble baston, espada y daga, solo baston, knife and kuntao. This raises the question of whether to train with an Escrima Knife Fighting system focusing only on a certain weapon or training all the different Escrima Knife Fighting weapon combinations.

If you want to fast track your Escrima Knife Fighting learning time, then ADAPTATION is for you. Adaptation in Escrima Knife Fighting is the process of converting a technique from one weapon to another. Examples are double Escrima Knife Fighting stick to single Escrima Knife Fighting stick, single stick to knife. I refer to adaptation as learning 5 Escrima Knife Fighting weapons simultaneously.

This means a single Escrima Knife Fighting technique can be utilized in all 5 Escrima Knife Fighting weapon combinations. This approach enables the Escrima Knife Fighting student to focus on the technique rather than on the weapon(s) used. If a practitioner is trained in double sticks and knows how to adapt it to empty hands, he/she simply adapts and applies the double sticks techniques to empty hands in self-defense situations.

Having this mindset of adaptability also means that you can convert everyday ordinary things such as pens, umbrella, magazine, car keys, etc.. into Escrima Knife Fighting weapons for self-defense and applying Escrima Knife Fighting techniques for that matter.

I always enjoyed the Escrima classes I did (many years ago now) but there is something about unarmed combat that seems more real. Like, I will never carry a weapon, so will never use any of the techniques in a self defence situation. But all the same, the sticks and knives can be fun to learn.

I don't carry a weapon either, but training in Kali is the knowledge you will need to go against someone using one. I only carry a weapon if I'm traveling to an unsafe area, you would too, because the weapons is the training tool, if you don't practice with the weapon how do you expect to get go against it? If you understand the difference of these Filipino arts and sciences you would train in esKrima, as is the spelling from the Doce Pares system in Cebu, with many many years of experience, since 1521, when the Spanish arrived in Mactan. It was after this very bloody battle that the knife was outlawed in the Philippines, even today in the local restaurants you get a spoon and fork to eat with. History always shows the reality of the culture, and it's why I practice every day, because the bad guy always has one. I'm at G.T.Bray Park for open class, email me if you'd like to know more MasGuru@KaliSilat.org or just visit us GT Bray Park 51st Street & 33 Ave, Bradenton, FL. regards, Greg
