  • where to start?

I am currently in a police academy and want to further myself in the self defense realm. Not knowing much at all about martial arts, I was wondering what form(s)/style(s) would be best suited for my needs?

I would recommend Filipino arts. Obviously, you're thinking in this vein too, or you wouldn't have posted your question in this forum

I'm not an LEO, but I know and have trained with quite a few. I think the FMA are ideal for LEO. The stick training is directly applicable to your tactical baton. The weapon training in general can be useful when you're faced with a weapon wielding perp. The gun isn't always your best option and sometimes, for various reasons, it's not an option at all.

I would also recommend something that specializes in locks. Most FMA systems have locks, but locking isn't their specialty. I learned locks in Kali and Silat, but my depth of locking knowledge came from a system called Shen Chuan. But Shen Chuan is a pretty thinly spread system. The founder's school is in Nacogdoches, Texas. He has a student (also a police officer) in the Dallas area who, as far as I know, teaches some. And I'm in Louisville, Kentucky. To my knowledge, those three places are the only place to find Shen Chuan.

However, other arts that are known for locking are Small Circle Jujitsu, Hapkido, Chin Na, and, much lesser known, Rikasan (a Silat system). And these are just the barest tip of the iceberg

That'd be my recommendation. As for a specific system of FMA, I'd personally recommend Lacoste/Inosanto blend, but I'm kinda biased since that's the core of what the FMA that I train.

Where are you located? I, or someone else here, may have some suggestions for people in your area.

    Mike

Well ... what do you know?

I lived in Nacogdoches for a year and a half. I've been interested in seeing some Lightning Arnis. I don't know how I missed the fact that you were in Houston. If I had known, I'd have visited ya.

However, if you're interested, there's an annual event in Nacogdoches called Camp Lansdale. A school there, Lansdale's Self-Defense, brings in a couple of instructors each year to teach. I've taught at 3 of them (only once as a "headliner"). It's always a good time and a good group of people. I don't know yet who's on the bill to teach this year except Prof. Lansdale (he always teaches). But I'll definitely be there. Previously, it's been held on the first weekend of October. I know it's going to be in October this year, too, but I have heard a specific date yet. I assume it'll be the first weekend.

If you could come up, we could meet and work out some then. Otherwise, I can try to arrange my trip to provide me time to get down to Houston.

Appreciate it. I'll be in Nacogdoches in October and I'll try to make it down to Houston. Can't make any guarantees, but I'll try.
