  • Fighting with Keys

Has anyone ever studied into using a set of keys as a weapon?

I know you can hold the Key(s) between your fingers and punch with them for greater effect. Is it possible to "swing" a set of keys like you would a knife or stick? I know the damage done with them might not be that great...

Carrying a knife in the UK is illegal, but I would like some form of self-defence weapon.

Also, has anyone used or carries a Kobutan?

    keys

I have this pretty long thing, designed to have around my neck with keys on it, i would guess using it as a weapon would be nice. Like a nunchako kind of thing i guess? and it is in my pocket 100% of my time.. maybe i should make my keys sharper:P

The Kobutan has a hole at the end and is pretty much designed to be carried as a key-chain. You can use the pointy end of the Kobutan to stab at so-called 'pressure points' or you can use it as a handle to hold while swinging the keys to deflect knife attacks and to hit the face with.

Knives with a blade 3inches or less can be carried in the UK. I carry a 3inch folder and own a Kobutan. Never use the Kobutan though, just bought a hand full of metal bullpoint pens from a MUJI store in London and put one in every jacket I own.

Learn some basic wing-chun and apply the techniques while holding a short weapon like a Kobutan, knife (or in my case, a pen!) and you should have the makings of a good self-defense method.

        Just remember, keep it real!

        Good Luck

Don’t put a lot of faith into keys, maybe if it’s a one or two strike and run situation.
But against a fighter it’s not going to make that much difference. One problem to consider is holding them, when you do your hand is clinched and committed to them that cuts down on the options you would otherwise have with your hand.
If your going to use a pocket weapon use something that is more effective. The kubaton is a somewhat better step up.

its not about studying it as a weapon but adapting it when and if the situation arises, If you study a pure stabbing system with knife this is great way to be able to transition it with the keys..

            thanks
