    demonstraion clip

Looks like all the other rehashed martial arts crap you see in demonstrations. Looks good though( they all do otherwise no one would want to see it).

Interesting to watch, but not realistic (IMHO). Refer to the first post on the "Knife" thread below.

          First it was amusing-
The stage lighting, Rage Against the Machine playing in the background.

          Then it was silly-
Do they really think that shite would work?

          Then it was sad-
Ya, I really think they believe those are valid knife defences.

Now that I think about it, its back to funny!

Too much energy wasted, in my opinion.

I hope they did a realitic knife demo with an FMA artist as the feeder. I don't know what will be the outcome.

The main problem with it is that it was rehearsed. I mean if you get a guy that really wanted to attack with the knife no one would be be able to do that crap on him......

Were they Tae Kwon Do guys? I think rehearsed moves do have a hint of unrealism to them because the purpose is to entertain and show the art. From that brief demonstration, you can see what that martial art is all about.

From looking at that, I think its all flowerly crap! It's things like that that get people killed.

Since there are so many TKD-schools out there there's got to be some MCDojangs

The expertise of TKD-people is kicking and various hand techniques. Why the hell can't they show us some good kicking instead of trying to pretend that they are able to defend themselves against knives using the techniques displayed in this clip?

Of course a show like this most oftenly is rehearsed in advance, but I think that one shouldn't let that allow usage of dangerous and useless defense like this one.

I come from a TKD-background myself, and must say that clips like this one really pisses me off, mainstream TKD-schools do not teach knifedefense and attacks.

We have recently started training with knifes, and the only conclusion so far after some easy sparring is that almost nobody of us succeeded in neutralizing an opponent confident in his knife skills without getting seriously hurt or killed.

The last thing we should do is to try to create the impression of beeing able to neutralize an opponent with a knife in such a way like the defense shown on the clip. Instead one must bring in techniques from other systems aimed at knife defense, including principles of defense that is somewhat different than most TKD-techniques aimed at unarmed combat. The worst thing I see is people trying to create the impression of beeing able to disarm a person armed with a knife with a kick to the knife hand with an extended leg pointing almost straight out, can one ask for an easier target?

I agree with your post. The other problem is when they go to an outside source to learn knife techniques, stay for a little while, go back and start teaching "TKD, Karate, Kung-Fu" knife techniques. As if their art had them all along.

I remember someone posting that they heard a TKD instructor comment that his fifteen year old kid (yellow belt) could kick a knife out of someones hand. True or not? But it's common type of ignorance that I've seen in many martial artists toward dealing with a knife. Pretty sad really.
