  • Sayoc Kali in 'The Hunted'

    Hi Guys,

I haven't seen 'The Hunted' yet as it hasn't been released over here in the UK, but am aware of the Sayoc Kali that it features. Has anybody seen it yet? As far as i know it's been out in the US for a few weeks now.

What are the knife scenes like? Anything worth seeing???

It's definitely, worth seeing. I mean anytime FMA's is portrayed in movies, I believe it's worth seeing. Tuhon Chris Sayoc, Tuhon Rafael Kayanan, and Tuhon Tom Kier did an excellent job in transferring the methodologies of Sayoc Kali to the big screen. The movie did not get the greatest reviews in the world, but the fight scenes have gotten plenty of great reviews.

I think they did a great job with the knife fights. There had to be some leeway- I would think that in a knife fight between experts, it would almost be over before it began, but I really liked the way they worked out. One nice touch a friend pointed out was that they weren't 'clean'- for example, at one point a character uses an arm destruction. The arm doesn't break on the first blow (like they would show in most fights), and so they really have to work it.

I hope the film gets released in the UK! Sounds gruesome!

Really enjoyed the knife scenes. The movie was good too, but was kinda slow at parts. I knew the choreographer had to be a FMA person, and found out a few days later that it was the Sayoc Kali guys. Really great stuff.

Unfortunately my date thought it was a bit too gruesome.

Well i can't wait to see it. I downloaded what i thought was this movie, but it turned out to be 'the hunted' starring christopher lambert and john lone. So i was a bit bummed it wasn't the benicio del torro one, but i like the lambert movie too so it wasn't so bad

Has anyone seen this one? It's the one were john lone is the leader of a ninja cult called the mikato? Some pretty cool samurai verses ninja action!! hehe

The only decent scene in that earlier film was the big sword fight in the bullet train where the ninjas are at one end, going through the train and the samurai is at the other.

The samurai guy should've been the star of the film. I have no idea what Christopher Lambert was doing in that film besides taking a short break from cranking out Highlander sequels.

I didn't think it was a bad film, and thought the Japanese samurai guy should have been the star as well. The train scene is quite good!!

As I recall, Lamberts character trained in using the sword for about ten minutes, and then beat the bad guy! I hate endings like that (except for Karate Kid...hahaha)!

Yes - the "train for ten minutes and suddenly become the second coming of Musashi" was a bit hard to swallow. Almost as hard to swallow as Lambert's idea of "acting" (which basically means he squints, talks with a rasp and goes around with a look on his face as if he's severely constipated).

The Japanese samurai dude should have been the star. That scene where the Ninjas throw shuriken at him screamed "badass". Unfortunately, some parts of the film screamed "cheap"! I think some of the externals were filmed in Vancouver (subbing for Tokyo). And John Lone as Ninja cult leader was a little bizarre...Japan is a heavily industrialized country...just where are these wacko Ninja cult "militia" dudes supposed to be hiding out? Although you have to love a film that throws in a gratuitous Ninja cult menage a trois just for giggles.

Cool moments were: 1) fight in the bullet train, 2) seppuku by cutting off face (seems a bit painful and ineffective for commiting suicide but it was still cool) and 3) the Samurai "surrendering" his sword to the authorities by breaking it.

                    "Stupid Samurai.

I don't fight for honor; I fight to win!"

The Samurai guy; he's a legend in Japan - he's done so many Samurai movies. He's like the Japanese John Wayne.

I highly recommend his Samurai series Lone Wolf and Cub .

Is that the guy from Lone Wolf and Cub? Cool! Those films were hilarious! The blood sprays out like gas leaks when the baddies get slashed!

I remember the kid in the pram with the blades that come out of the wheels. It chopped quite a few legs off!

                        hunted....

I thought that the fight scenes were good but the movie plot lacked alittle.

I saw the movie, and to be honest, I wasn't impressed. But then, it is a movie, and I am sure the Sayoc Kali guys had to compromise on many things to make it more cinematic. Still, it is FMA and is good overall for us who train in it.

This is a bit off topic but i was wondering if any of you guys had seen 'the bourne identity' with Matt Damon? It's got a pretty good fight scene in it, that features some Kali. I thought that scene was well done, cinematically speaking, technically speaking i couldn't really comment 'cos i've only just started JKD/Kali myself.

                            Anyone else like that movie?

                            Cheers

I bought it on DVD the other day. I think the fight you are referring to is the one in the apartment. The fights were ok, but it feels like there was a bit of camera trickery to make the fights look a lot better. I quite liked the film though!!

I'm not sure whether the knifefighting was choreographed by a FMA practitioner (I haven't looked into it).

How are you finding your JKD training?
