    Swan,

I had my first session at Bob Breen's academy on Wednesday, so far i'm very impressed with it. We've only done basic footwork, the jab, cross and a few parrys, no Kali yet, hehe. There's a very good atmosphere there and everyone is very friendly but at the same time you can tell they take their training seriously, which is cool. I'm definatley looking forward to continued training there!!

Yes regarding the bourne identity, the apartment scene was the one i was referring to, sorry, i forgot there were a few others. I seem to remember reading somewhere that a JKD/Kali guy named Steve Powell choregraphed the fight scenes. I think he's from the UK??

I think Steve Powell is based in Manchester, but I don't really know much about him. Bob Breen was at Seni03 on Saturday, but I never got the chance to meet up and have a chat with him. I did buy a Panantukan vol 1 video, which was excellent. I think I'll purchase vol 2 and the knife defence one as well.

Sounds like a good school to train in. I've had a look at the timetable and there is a lot to do there! Did you have to do any assessment of your martial arts skills before you started?

        Swan,

There wasn't really any assesment as such of prior experience or ability, seeing as i enrolled on the beginners course, they don't expect you to have too much background in MA. My understanding is that if you are relatively well experienced, they will assess you and allow you to filter straight through to the phase classes, but i could be wrong. Black belts/Instructors in other MA are permitted to enroll on the instructor's course, it says on the website.

I have the panantukan videos too, 1 and 2, they are really good. I'm looking to get the 'boxing phase' vid from the first series next, as that is pretty much what i'm doing right now. I can't wait to get going with the phase one classes

Are you still thinking of moving to london?

        Cheers

EDIT: Just found this regarding assessment:

If you are unsure which would best suit you, information and advice is always available at the Bob Breen Academy. We also offer you the opportunity to participate in an assessment class, free of charge, prior to becoming an Academy Member. The timetables at both the London and Dartford centres accommodate a number of assessment classes each week.

I'm stuck in Stoke-on-Trent and I'm sick of the place, so I am considering a move to London. It all depends on whether I can get a job with a good salary down there. I don't want to move down, and have no money to go out, train etc.

I learnt quite a lot from the first video I saw. "Scooping" the arm after a parry isn't something I know about.

What I would like to buy are the Dan Inosanto videos that you can order from his site, but they are quite expensive. Has anybody got these?

Well i've just seen this movie, What a dissappointment. The kali wasn't too bad, although i think the choreography could have been done much better. The film itself is dire! If it wasn't for the 2 or 3 minutes of kali in this movie i would have considered it a complete waste of my 2 hours and £8.

I think, the Sayoc clan did one of the most realistic jobs ever shown on the big screen. Granted, the movie wasn't the greatest, but Sayoc Kali, is on of the most progressive knife combat systems in the world. To me, the kali shown in the film was awesome, but you're right, the movie could've been better.

I think I'll download the film rather than watch it at the cinema!

I'll probably buy it when it comes out on DVD. I hope it has behind the scenes action w/ Tom Kier and Rafael Kayanan teaching the 2 stars.
