  • Inosanto Kali

I was told there was 25 angles of attack in the Inosato Kali system. Does anyone know what they are and if there is a diagram or something on the net?

I know there are 12 main strikes which are:

      1. Downward forehand strike to collarbone
      2. Downward backhand strike to collarbone
      3. Horizontal forehand strike to waist
      4. Horizontal backhand strike to waist
      5. Stab to belly
      6. stab to upper left chest (looking at opponent)
      7. stab to upper right chest (looking at opponent)
      8. downward strike to top of head
      9. Downward forehand strike to knee
      10. Downward forehand strike to other knee
      11. Upward forehand strike to midsection (Up angle 2)
      12. Upward backhand strike to midsection (up angle 1)

But it has been a long time since I practiced the 25 count Inosanto/Lacoste blend system angles. I have been practicing kali for 19 years now and I just don't remember. I'm getting old now.

There are 24 basic angles. Then it goes into dos manos up until about 48. I was up through about 70 at one point.

I was always curious as to why the Filipino systems had so many distinct angles. The system I study only has nine.

You'll get into large numbering systems if you actually start trying to catalog dos manos (two hands on one stick) or things like enganio & alinganan. That's how Guro Dan wound up with so many angles. Many are variations off the first 12.

Well, numbering systems are silly anyway, and I hope that nobody obsesses about them. (If you want to worry about something, worry about your footwork and cardiovascular conditioning.) It all hurts when a good guy whacks you with a heavy stick, no matter what the number is. Um, on the Inosanto system, though, you have two different ways of doing angles 6,7 and 8 depending on whether you're referencing the Villabraille influence or LaCoste influence.

              Thanks for the explaination, Terry.

That sums up my feelings on this one.

Angling systems are just "shorthand" methods within a school or system. Rather than saying "Strike forehand toward my left temple" You can just say, "Feed me angle 1"

Theoretically, you could have an infinite number of angles ... but that would just be overkill. Each system uses a handful of angles that are, in the opinion of that system, representative of the general classifications of possibilities. Or based on what they feel is most commonly going to be used.

But all it really does is give everyone a shorthand for training. And, as has been pointed out, the specific number systems are irrelevant.

There are other martial arts systems that use the angle concept. Himalayan arts use a 9-angle concept based on the wheel of life.

Sayoc Kali is based on templates of targets rather than angles of attack. Also a good method IMO.

                        Hello Moromoro,

The Vital Templates are a series of target structures that lie within the body of an opponent. The Templates and drills are taught as a method to teach body movement, footwork, target discrimination ---minimizing dangerous involuntary reactions (trained responses or otherwise) ; and linking Sayoc Kali with other martial arts systems.

                        I hope this helps.

There are 25 angles in the Inosanto sytem. He will show you if you ask him at a seminar. The instructors will usually only use the first 12 to train. The sytem is only to have a common language to talk about training. otherwise no one could practice. like trying to speak portugese to a redneck.

There are 36 angles of attack in the Insanto system...

I have studied on and off with Guru Dan for 20 yrs...and I have the 36 on tape.
I have studied so many FMA systems, that I don't recall them from the top of my head. If you want I will research it and get back with you. Let me know, but for now as I know it there are 36 angles.
