[QUOTE=The_Judo_Jibboo] If someone attacks me armed or not, my greatest goal would be to pin him to the ground and let him exhaust himself, then walk away leaving him sweaty and embarassed. If the fight needs to end quicker than that, then I can choke him or maybe knock him out. If the fight needs te end faster I can try to break a bone. If it escalates beyond all these things then I can draw my knife.
    QUOTE]

I to have studied Judo, and holding them down is great and noble, but in the real world you will be leaving yourself open to a number of other attacks. As you are holding down this person trying to let them exhaust him/her self, their friends at the bar have just picked up the bar stall and have caved you head in!!!!
Why are people into this theory, I'll do this, then this, then the other. What if you can't hold them down, what if their Art is movement and power based, you step in for a hold, he step's off, squares you up and your whole idea is shot. You are trying to hold them, or choke them out!! What happened to you pre fight opinions, you reading body language etc, seeing what's coming in the attack, rather than just responding to his/her action.

    I'll ask you a question.

    Why do you block?

    Train hard, stay safe.

To cut or NOT to cut. A question!

I can understand NOT wanting to learn to cut. The idea of taking someone's life is repulsive at best but it may well be better (not as bad) as the alternative. Being victimized yourself. I was EXTREMELY traumatized by my first experience with knife training, spent about 15 years trying to forget all the sanguinary details, attempting to block it out of my mind. It was horrifying to visualize the pressurized fluid spraying from a wound I just inflicted!

So why learn to kill? Because knowing how a blade is used to attack is the first step to knowing how to defend against it. You get "comfortable" with the warmth of blood and it's distinct odor so you will never need to experience it yourself. Learn to HIT with the back of the blade and the handle. Learn to trap and lock, pass and disarm, redirect and EVADE a blade!

That's the art in eskrima! It's not all about cutting and stabbing. Is it?

Love these three year old threads....

                  Why I Do Kali

My FMA training has helped save my ass many many times! One example was posted by the administrator of this forum, Tim Mousel who had started a thread in this forum titled "MSDA student knife fight story".
The thread reffered to a blog I had typed up in my myspace page about one such incident. Check it out and see WHY Kali training was worth it!

Dude, it’s just not my style to down people by saying they fight like shit but, don’t get me wrong; I love it when other people say it But yeah, some people think you strike some cool pose, the background music kicks in and you get to break your assailants neck in the last scene, just before you get the girl. Or you get a blue belt in gjj, when a few tournaments and you’re set for self defense. Real self defense sux; It’s about killing. I don’t even know why I train, other than the fact that I love it.

Real SD is never (HARDLY EVER) about killing. It's about getting away with your all your teeth still in your mouth and your ribs intact. It's about demonstrating your intent to fight back and making them change their mind about hurting you. Even when you're ambushed it's not about killing anyone but it IS about keeping yourself ALIVE.
But don't take my word on it, ask your attorney!

What you just put in type actually borders on premeditation...You have THOUGHT about it, you're just waiting for some poor sap to try something so you can waste him...

naw dude, I'm not social enough to get into that kind of trouble. I got a story about being attacked by a couple of pit bulls that just wouldn’t let up. It was an unusually long and drawn out fight. I’ll post it some day…just not now. Ironically enough, it was you and a couple of others on this forum that convinced me to carry a knife again just before it happened. When I posted that “self defense is about killing” stuff I was thinking about my little doggy story…or home invasion. Man, I don’t want to hurt anybody; that’s not my game.

                                Kali

To all the brothers in Martial Arts....I would say that "KALI" is not for every body who are learners in Martial Arts, it is not for every body because of ovious facts of slicing and bleeding the opponents and sorts like that, don't force an individual in to it, they must have the peace of mind and heart to train the Kali and accept it to them selves because if not....it is just going to be useless for that kind of individual to learn this that probably would cause his life in real scenarios of blade fighting because of his "HISITATIONS" to strike or attack his ARMED OPPONENT. It is deffenitely difficult or unrealistic to use a bladed weapon against an opponent if your opponent is not even showing any killing weapon like....gun, blade, baseball bat, steel pipe and etc. that you think would kill you, and you may accept kali as your last chance against a very deadly aggressor or killer to defend your self if not your love ones, but not all kali usages are all for killing only but also to neutralize your aggressor or to only paralize your opponent temporarily while you are trying to save your life and have enough time for you to leave immediately the place, but as I mentioned earlier, KALI is NOT FOR EVERY ONE if the said individual does'nt want it!! learn some thing else kind of defense, like Judo, Aiki-DO, JU-Jitsu, Boxing or even ARNIS, I like and practice all these kind of defense myself, even at my present age of 65-years old.
