  • martial arts of mindanao

    Hello,

I am wondering if there are are some brothers practicing martial arts from the southern Philippines on the forum.
Is anybody here practicing bangkoy, supring, kuntao silat or one of the southern philippino escrima styles?

I find that these systems are very different from indonesian-malaysian silat or Visayan-Luzon Arnis styles.

      Hello moromoro,

Supring is a martial art practiced in Sabah (Borneo) and the southern philippines.
I don't have much information on the art but I heard there are five styles developped by different tribes there.

One looks like silat, it is low, and imitates the sweeping movements of the buwaya (crocodile),.
I know that there is another one that is based on throws and locks.
My silat guru showed me another style, he hit me with multiple slaps on nerve points moving around me..... I couldn't see anything.

From what I saw from Bankoy it looks like pukulan but I don't know much....

He wasn't really willing to go into details on these subjects and I did not insist.....

By the way were you introduced into silat or
local escrima, or any local martial art given your familys origin?

          filipino

Sorry Veynn but my Tagalog is terrible.

It is very confusing for us foreigners, sometimes people say Pilipino, Filipino or Philippino......

so the right word is filipino.....

          anyway mabuhay ang Philippines!

By the way were you introduced into silat or local eskrima
the only exposure i got was from my uncle and this was eskrima which was also taught by my great grandfather. Just basic single stick and buntot pagi as well as lyabellyesa. As far as silat i dont know how well versed he is in it, he did learn from a few old men in isabela, capital of basilan and also he learnt a style way back in the 60's which the master called karate but was closer to silat again also in basilan.

            thanks

              Hello, moromoro.

I was introduced to silat, local escrima as well as local judo combat.
The escrima style I am learning is blade oriented (bolo-knive).
Many muslim clans in Basilan all have their own systems...

Hello, I just have a question.

What is the difference between kuntaw and philippino kuntao silat?
Is kuntaw a kind of kung fu?
I have been told the Tausugs practice a sort of Kung Fu.
They are also supposed to be very good performers with the spear, did somebody see them practicing?

                  Krys,
in Cecil Quirino's "Crossing the Sulu seas" you can see examples of Tausug spear work.

Most martial arts from Mindanao are Cultic

Eg; Sphinx, Pulahan, Greenan, Puti-an, Amahan, Sagrado Corazon Senor and even Muslim martial arts etc. They have a so called anting-anting or amulet which they think protects them from injury from bladed weapons, Guns. But not from wood because they say its natural. They also perform Orasions or Rituals in which they believe they will have Supernatural powers.
