  • Perfect Length for Escrima

I read somewhere in an obscure site that sells Escrima that the "perfect" length of an escrima is the length of your arm (armpitt to tip of your middle finger).

here is the URL... scroll down to the escrima section

i measured mine and im right at 26 inches. however most top of the line escrima come in 28inches 29 inches... should i cut down my escrima stickss to match my "ideal length" ? is this a true statement about escrima length? How do i refinish the ends of i do so: assume Bahi or Kamagong wood (leaning towards Bahi )

    please advise

some styles which don't like an exsposed butt on there stick will measure their sticks in this manner. you will find that this is a good length because the stick length with your body machanics will work well. your also find that if your style does use an exsposed butt then those 29-30" sticks end up around your 26" length.

It all depends on your style, where you hold your hand as said before, and which distance your style favors.

        Well said Haumana.

But one should not always train with sticks having the same length...
It is interesting to spare with peoples having
sticks of different sizes... ie short sticks angainst long yantok......
The footwork will have to adapt and range awareness will change....

You never know what you will have on D day.....

ya hit the nail on the head! spar with and against as many different tools as ya can! I did a demo for a womans expo once where I (DARE I SAY IT....) dressed as an ugly ass woman!!! HAHA! I played out funny scenarios where I defended myseld in my home with a high heel, which, turns out is a cool weapon due to the hook, and point, you can trap, and lock etc. The original kerambit! One scenario I did as I sat on the crapper as I was home alone, and heard a noise outside the restroom, I used the towel hanger as a stick, then substituted the wooden toilet paper holder as a palm stick!!!, funny and humoerous yeah, but it is true, that you should never stop imagining, the various weapons at your disposal in a crunch.

Hahaha! Are you suggesting carrying one instead of a Kerambit, (at least it is legal)?

Hi brother Snarlin Stef, I would like to answer your question about
how long is the lenght of the arnis stick should be ? as you mentioned in your note, you already have the 29" instead of 28" lenght of the arnis stick, I would advice you to staywith it, it is only a matter of an inch, and you can still use it perfectly as long as you are comfortable using it...and that is the whole meaning of it....your comfort of using it....where it would be easy for you to swing it, twirl it, and other things you wanted to do with it as long as it would serve you the way you want it to be or protect you properly. What is the reason of using too long of a stick or how short it is if it does not serve you properly ?
I hope this would answer your question and if there is some more I can do help you...let me know, and thank you for your interest in our pilipino martial art.
