Can anyone tell me about using canes in martial arts? I have no experience in FMA, but was just curious.

Hapkido and a Korean style called Kuk Sool use a cane, but you have to be a 2nd degree black belt before they teach you.

Most FMA's can adapt their stick techniques to a cane, as can many Okinawan and Japanese stylists adapt it to their own stick styles. I do believe "Superfoot"Bill Wallace is marketing a line of "Combat Canes" with videos to go with them. IMHO, the cane is a wonderfully humble, diseptive, and effective weapon. It is considered a sign of disability, which confers upon the carrier a appearance of weakness. If the cane carrier is not, then it is an unpleasant suprise to the attacker. A cane can be carried almost anywhere, even where other possible weapons could not. When I lived in NYC, I had a knee injury that left me first on crutches (a bad idea if you live in NYC for numerous reasons.) Then I switched to a cane. I never had to engage anyone with it, but its presence made a difference in several enounters. I have also heard of varoius stories where some pissed off senior citizen beat the hellout of some hoodlem their grandsins's age with their cane .
