  • Thrusting- Useful in sparring or not?

Just a question to those of you who spar/fight fullcontact. Alot of the fighters that I've faced, hardly if not, don't even use the thrusting in a fight. I find it to be very useful alot of times in the long range and in the clinch. Some good hard thrusting in the clinch will make your opponent either back paddle or scream "stop".

How about punyos, does anyone use these as well. If yes, when and how do you apply them.

I found thrusting to be very useful to put the stick back in my hand. Wearing street hockey gloves, the stick has a tendency to slip when I swing. After a few swings, the stick is about to fly out of my hand and I don't even know it. So, after losing my stick this way a few times, it dawned on me that I can use a thrust to re-set the stick in my hand. The one time I used the punyo, it was in a clinch. I got the guy's stick arm wrapped up and hit the top of his head with the punyo. In the tourney I was fighting in, clinching/grappling weren't permitted so they broke us up at that point.

in our style of stickfighting, the thrust is a very important part of the fighting. except we do not use it to "poke" in front of us. we use the thrust like a hook punch and the uppercut. so for example i can set it up with the regular witik to get a reaction from the opponent, then BANG! use the upper cut through whatever defense he is useing. but with gloves, it is important to have a palm that is going to grip the stick or my hand will slide. the thrust if you use it at a close range is almost impossible to block if you are fast and can distract him before you throw it.

thrusting is one of my favorite hits, but you cannot use them in tournament.

Depends on the tournament :-) The tournament I fought in allowed them.

We also use that type of curving thrust (we call it "sunkete") as well as the straight thrust that is more commonly found in FMA.

I find myself using the thrusting in a hook or uppercut type fashion as well. It's hard to see it coming if your on the other end. So I sometimes use it to set up my opponent as a fake to the high line while switching it in mid air to attack the low line. Or, what I like doing sometimes is to just leave it out there half extended to see what type of defense my opponent will give me. Usually what happens is, he'll try to either hit the stick or hit my hand sending my weapon hand in motion. With this motion I'll counter attack to his low line and maybe follow-up with a power shot to the high line. I don't always use this, though I find it to work on someone who hasn't see it done before. Chad & Stuart already know my strategy with this sneaky tactic, so I don't use it with them anymore.

Back to the thrust, yes I do find it very useful in a fight. It helps to keep my opponen on his toes. It can be done as a jab, an uppercut, and a hook, all with or without the follow thru.

As far as tournaments go, I haven't been in one YET! I've been to a couple to notice what your saying. Though I very much look forward to trying my skills in one. That should be alot of fun!!!

James is modest. He's never been in a tournament but has been in nearly 100 stickfights and uses padded recievers gloves, which don't stop the hurtin'. He is the guy without the shirt on the website.
