You're right about cheap stuff in Quiapo. It is quite dangerous for foreigners who walk alone. But if you bring someone who knows the place a local. You let him bargain for you.

You know I had a friend(Filipino amercan) born and raised in California. But looked very much like a typical pinoy. But did not speak a word of tagalog. And I brought him over Quiapo to buy stuff. Our modus operandi was that he would not say a word and just point out whatever he wanted. At first he did not understand why. But I let him tell me what he wanted then ask how much. I would go to the other store and ask in tagalog. The difference is at least triple. Need I say more.

You can also get martial arts supplies there. Like kicking pads, focus mitts, shin guards, Karate gi's,hakamas. anything. you can think of. Just bring someone who can help bargain with you. I know all this because our school was in Quiapo. It was my hang out. Don't wear any jewelry and expensive shades.

    hope this helps.

Quiapo is where I trained. (GM Presas - Kombatan). I was living in Makati which as you probably know is very Westernized. And so, I LOVED QUIAPO! Other than being in the Provinces, it was the only time I felt like I was in SE Asia.

Also, one thing that made me laugh was that because the place has Arnis sticks, knifes, replica firearms and more balisongs than you can shake a dulo-dulo at, EVERYBODY knew about me and not to f*ck too much.... the arnis case I carried on my back gave my story away LOL. A couple of times in Makati, i was asked what was in the case when I was on my way to training. But in Quiapo, i'd hear whispers of "ooohhh arneeess!" lol

      Damn, i miss that place

Quiapo isn't THE bad neighbourhood of Manila... of course there are some serious criminals there but unless you have business with them there are worse places to go for the ordinary citizen i.e. Tondo, Caloocan, squatter areas.... the main p.b in Quiapo is the snatcher and the occasional jeepney robber, at night it could be dangerous for foreigner's if you go to the small side streets but what would you do there at night?:
If I remember well you will find fma equipment near the Church, can't remember the name of the street, I get lost myself there...
