this thread is dedicated to all philosophy of silat by the undertsanding of the old gurus and masters...they are not my own....but i welcome all brothers pesilat to give their oppinion on the subject or the philosophy...but please be sensitive to others as there are also some philosophy that are abit old fashioned and not well sit with western mind set.
but never the less it is supposed to make out why some teaching of silat are diffrent from others.hope fully we can really tap into the most dangerous weapon of all....the mind.....thanks...salam....

"....silat is clothing..like the shirt on your back...it is always on you..with you...but it depends on you to make your clothing nice or a rag..."

this was given to me by an old guru in perak,malaysia...that means silat will never gone from you no matter how long you have not used it.like the clothes in your closet...just like when some friend tried to sucker punch u,...next thing u know is ur friend is on the floor..holding his bleeding teeth...because silat is there...like the clothing on ur back...but this dosent mean that u can neglect training...just like shirts and pants...u must wash it..ironed in...so it looks good..but one thing all pesilat must know...the clothes is not for showing off...its a need....salam to all....

Nice words husnira...Thank you for the insight!

I think it goes a step further. The clothing is symbolic for your skin, because once you have Silat you can not get rid of it!

'....if being attack...let the enemy strikes 3 time without response...with each strike u discourage the fights..first strike u say u are sorry..2nd strike u remind him of god...3rd strikes warn him it is the last..."

this philosphy may sound conservative..emphesising that peace and harmony is still the actual goals of any fights or battle.3 times is the chance given to the enemy....from what i have encountered...the teachers and gurus really meant the 3rd chance will be the the last of the enemy's attack...because back in the old days...the only reason people attack people is either they are conquering,stealling...or run amok...to make sure that the enemy really understand what they are doing..the 3 strike rule was used...its like a warrant for the defender to give the fatal blow...those days...there are no police or court to takedown merauding villains and pirates.every man for himself...to defend your family..village or country.

It is not uncommon in some knife styles (tanto-jutsu for example) to offer a warning cut. To TEACH your attacker that you are not wanting to kill him but if he pushes the issue or by ambush tries to take your life there must be an EXCEPTION to this three warning rule? Because in a surprise attack you may react without thinking about warning them...

So, when might a silat man strike a fatal blow while standing or without warning?

          Thank you.

            Regards...

I'm thinking that I should share some things with you my friend (husnira)

In the USA where I and some other members live it is VERY ILLEGAL to cut someone for the purpose of warning them of your superior skill with weapons.

In the USA a knife is one of several so called "deadly" weapons. So if you use any deadly weapon to simply sever the fingers or cut on the brow as a warning you can go to jail for a long time. In the USA self defense with a weapon pre suposes the intent of the aggressor is serious bodily harm or death so we do not have the legal obligation to warn our attacker at all.

One of a handfull of silat men here in the USA teach edged weapon defense to police officers and civilians but he is American and understands the laws of our land and the issue of using deadly force to defend against armed assaults. We must be in IMMEDIATE fear of "Serious" injury or death to use a weapon for self defense at all.

We can't even own police batons but guns are okay... Go figure that one out!

While I support your moral obligation to give every opportunity to the attacker to change his mind I would suggest that your attacker seldom holds such values.

            All the best!

            Ray

              salam...

my friend...its obivious to me that u relate silat with knife..actually silat is much more than knife or kris...the philosophy goes beyond attacks also...its about humanity and honour...a silat master does not relies on weapons....me myself dont belief in weapons..in the u.s actually its much more freedom for the citizens to own weapons..concealed or not.. because of the high civics expectation...and about the gun issue...the N.R.A surely agrees with that...for me..i hope to change the mind set of the pesilat outside nusantara so that they dont view silat as only about knife, kerambit or kris...hopefully they understand that silat is about the mind and soul...it developes humanity and unity....tant01...i believe u have experience the deadly form of silat thru knife and conceal weapons...but do u believe that the knife pierce the skin? or is it the skin is too soft to repel the knife?...think about it..as the masters made me think about it...and hopefully u will understand...with salam and respect..
