  • How accurate was NHK’s portrayal of the Musashi vs. Muso encounter?

I’ve been watching the NHK drama, on channel 26 in the SF Bay Area, about Musashi Miyamoto’s life. Ever since I saw the portrayal of Musashi’s encounter with Muso Gonnosuke, I’ve been wondering how well the series represented the use of the short staff taught by Gonnosuke.

Is there anyone who has been watching the series as well, or has seen it, and can verify or comment on the portrayal’s accuracy?

I’m not too interested in how the fight itself was portrayed. I’ve searched the web and read Eiji Yoshikawa’s book, finding that most accounts conflict. So I’ve long since lost interest in how many times they fought and whether there was a clear victory or not.

      ‘æ‚R‚S‰ñ ‘ÎŒˆI–²‘z—¬

The episode portraying their first encounter was number 34. The title was g‘ÎŒˆI–²‘z—¬h which Babel Fish translates as gConfrontation! Dreams Style.h

From looking at the NHK Musashi site it looks like Muso and Musashi will meet up again in episode 41. So Ifm looking forward to watching it this Saturday night.

          Too bad...

Too bad, it's a good show. Unlike Eiji Yoshikawa’s book, this drama covers more of his life after his fight with Sasaki Kojiro.

              Musashi

The name of the series is Musashi and is produced by NHK. In the SF Bay Area, it’s being broadcast with English subtitles on channel 26 Saturday nights at 9:30pm PST. Episode 40 was the last to play here, but in Japan they are already up to episode 46. I don’t know where Toudiyama is downloading from; you’ll need to check with him about that.
