Actually it was Imperialism that motivated Japan to invade Asia and the Pacific. Shintoism just happens to be an aspect of the Japanese culture.

As a nation, we too are guilty of Imperialism. The idea of manifest destiny plus uncurable diseases caused us to nearly wipe out an entire race of natives who inhabited North America. On top of that, we enslaved an entire race of people to make the expantion happen.
