kenpo and kempo are pretty much the same thing they are a form of karate based on circular motion.
like in a kata your start and finish positions will be the same as if u had just done a loop... prolly a bad explanation. but yeh, its a form of karate, but less formalised permitting striking below the belt and the such... or at least it permitted it where i learnt it, but i didn't learn it for too long so someone may come in and prove me totally wrong hehe.

depends on the teacher in some cases.
I study something like Shorinji Kenpo at present.
(Teacher doesnt like naminga style- like my last teacher)
ours is supposed to be
a mixture of chinese and japanese arts
we learn grappling, ki, strikes, locks, kata, meditation all kinds of things.
been training 3 months.
been out of taught training almost 4years because i was trying to find something comparing to my previous training
and like studiobuddy said , a search will give you a lot of info
dont know much about official schools, because the whole grading system kinda turns me off

they say there is something called "shoalin kempo" which i heard was a load of crap, then there is regular japanese kenpo. i've heard the best style is, and it's a style i did for a few months, and that is ed parkers american kempo. it's got a mixture of japanese and chinese philosphies. it's got circular movements, as well as linear. it's also really into being able to string multiple attacks together into one. you can't rely on the one hit, one kill, in this day an age, and the strive to create techniques that can be used practically, and efficiently. unfortunately, it just turns out to be modern kata, and that doesn't really help. although, alot of school are really into full contact sparring from yellow belt and up(yellow being the first colored belt) and so learning how to spar, and how to react correctly to an oncoming attack or some of the upsides
check it out and bring us back more info, that way we can help out to a greater extent

really in present times we need to rely on the same martial arts that streetthugs use, guns.
I'd add if you are interested in self defense, go to agood martial arts class, and get a carrying license and go to a good shooting class.
because you might be able to break a collarbone or knifehand a throat, but if he's ten feet away with a gun, you either better be faster on the draw, or fast on your feet
