Have done Wado, and have always found it a perfect base to do other stuff from, never had problems training any other art, be it modern or clasical
Have done MT/kickboxing but also Shindo muso ryu jo jitsu with ease

Would have love o have done Shorinji Kempo, which is in nowhere related to other Kempo styles or with Karate, but we only have one teacher and he is teaching some new age group ( not the kind of group I was looking for at the time)

They have fightingforms which are pre-arranged but by the people doing them
I love the throws and the escape from those

PS don't listen to modernist if you have a question about traditional especially these two arts, most MA in the US have never seen Wado karate or Shorinji Kempo so are in no position to judge

Just find a school you like and stick with it. Good luck with everything.

study the students, not the style.

Check out both schools and ask questions. Check out the Black-belts. If the black-belts look weak its a crappy school. If all the ranks look in very good shape, that's a good sign. Also the more you continious spar the more you will learn. Ask about sparring as it's important. The next thing I would check before joining is whether or not they have a contract. Unless this school seems very promising, I would be hesitant to sign a contract. Usually the contract is there to get people over the initial 3 month hump, where most people drop out.

Other things that might be important is cost, whether they hold tournaments, what kind of equipment and room they have to offer, and how many people would be in your class, etc.

            just a couple ideas.

When I started to do Wado, what amazed me was that white belt were allowed to spar, only difference was that lower belts were instructed to fight with clenched fists, frim brown on open hands were allowed ( not so much openhand techniques but a gamae with clenche fists) this reduces the chance of broken fingers

Other schools only allowed sparring from 3rd Kyu and up ( brown belt)
