  • Kenpo & Kyokushin

    Hi,

Excuse my ignorance but Karate isn't my area of expertise. Took karate lessons as a kid and didnt really it.

Of the different forms of Karate that I read about on various forums including this one the styles that seem to be respected the most are Kyokushin and Kenpo.

I was wondering, how do these compare against each other?

    Are they similar?

Which one is a simpler style?

    Thanks.

Well, if we are talking about American Kenpo, it has elements from chinese and japanese arts, and tends to be more fluid. It has circular movements as well as linear, and can be fairly decent in the street
kyokushin, is a very hard style, but that's not always a bad thing, especially with this form
For my answer as to how effective it is, i answer with this one name

Okinawan Kenpo was my first Eastern martial art (before that it was just boxing and wrestling, I call those my Western arts ) and I enjoyed it a good bit. Not too familiar with kyokushin but I've heard good things about it.

The kenpo I studied was all about direct, effective attacks, combination striking, and hitting with power with a little bit of grappling in it. I think kyokushin follows the more "one hit, one kill" philosophy as they have powerful attacks but don't seem to throw as many of them.

kyokushin is kinda like kickboxing, cept they dont strike to the head in tournaments and practice and have some other restrictions.

Chinese Kenpo, Ryukuan Kenpo, American Kenpo, or Shorinji Kenpo?

If you're only interested in fighting, the kenpos are for you. Shorinji Kenpo might be too religious for you though.

I've heard that Chinese kenpo is the most complete of all kenpo systems.
