  • Kyokushin vs. a bear.

    I just bought Mas Oyama's "Strongest Karate" 1 & 2.
There is a small scene in pt. 2 where an American Kyokushin fighter supposedly kills a Pennsylvainia bear. Some parts of the film look pretty fake ;the way the bear stands (I know they stand, but the way in which this one got up looked wrong, pretty awkward, esp. when the kyokushin guy throws a kick and it misses, and the bear moves like it got hit.) makes it seem like a guy in a bear suit. Other parts of it, when the fighter is striking the bear on the ground look like they're done with an actual bear, but a trained one.

The guy isn't cut to ribbons when the bear has it's paws around him, and somehow manages to push the "bear" around on the balls of his feet.

Bulls, okay, yeah, Oyama sensei killed bulls, that seems somewhat probable.
Bears...are a little bit harder to buy...consider the fact that the bear is larger than a bull, has thicker fur, muscle, and bones...
I was under the direct impression that it was hard to kill a bull with a normal caliber gun...so how the hell would you kill one with your hands?

I dunno...I saw it, it cuts out before the kill shot...and I don't see the guy ripped up where the bear had it's claws...so...

if anyone else has seen this, please lend an opinion.

I suppose it could be possible if it was a small bear, or a large man. Do you know what kind of bears are in Pennsylvania? Because I just looked it up and:
black bears average from 125 to 600 pounds
brown bears average from 300 - 860 lbs
and grizzlies often weigh above the 1000 lbs mark . So it really depends, if it was a 125 lb bear then sure its possible, but if its an 1000 lb grizzly then no way

Theres only black bears in PA, though they get pretty large around there. A couple years ago they shot a 750 pound bear. If you shoot a bear in the head, the bullet wont penetrate the skull. They're pretty tough, so a human would be little of a match. There have been reports of people knocking bears out with rocks, or killing them with knifes, but bare-handed would be damn near impossible.

Garland, do you have a clip I can view. It might be fake, but is probably pretty comical.

Reminds me of the clip below.

looked like a typical brown bear.
I don't have a clip, it was part of a kyokushin documentary I bought.

a brown bear IS a grizzly bear.
They're huge. A grizzly can take down a moose, so I doubt the guy was fighting a brown bear.

            bears fighting

in the 1800's there was a series of fights held in california "Look up animal fights in california" where Mexicans and Gold rush camp workers were pitting animals against eachother. It came up in discovery channels animal versus animal series. In every fight they pitted bears against, the bear was victorious, they snaapped a bulls neck with a paw swipe! They also completely destroyed both a tiger and a lion. so man versus bear? highly improbable!

Not sure if its the same video...but i once saw this African American (I think) dude blasting a big tree, bark was flying around then he went after an average sized bear(not sure what kind)...he was socking that bear damn hard, but it seemed as if the bear was tickled and wanted to play(could of been his pet).Nevertheless,I can imagine punching a bears ribs and skull can do some damage to ones hand if not well conditioned.

I don't care how "conditioned" somebodies hands are...they aren't going o be able to kill a bear.

yeah...I saw that vid. back in early 90's...it was pretty cool stuff to watch. But,about that bear...I'm convinced the bear knew that dude pretty well...And I agree you ain't killing no bear barehanded...but if your hands aren't conditioned enough one just might injure themself by hittin a damn bear that hard or a tree for that matter...

LOL 300 pounds isn't even close to an average bear's weight. Unless its pretty small. But yeah I get the joke haha.

"Ill see it when I believe it."

LoL, you must mean I'll believe it when I see it.

Judo throw saves man from bold bear

MATSUMOTO, Nagano -- A man used a judo throw to scare off a bear that attacked him while he was picking mushrooms on a Nagano Prefecture mountain Monday afternoon, police said Tuesday.

At around 3:50 p.m., Keiichi Yamaguchi, 63, a resident of Matsuda, Kanagawa Prefecture, was picking mushrooms on a mountain in Omachi, Nagano Prefecture, when an Asiatic black bear suddenly attacked him, police said.

The bear bit Yamaguchi on the hand and left thigh and he responded by hitting it on the nose and in the stomach. When he used a judo technique to hurl the bear, it ran away from the scene. The bear was about 170 centimeters long, police said.

Yamaguchi said his injuries are not serious, but he intends to receive medical treatment at a local hospital. (Compiled from Mainichi and wire reports, Japan, Aug. 19, 2003)

                          Man fights off leopard
                          29/06/2003 08:08 - (SA)

By Riot Hlatshwayo and Oris Mnisi

Bushbuckridge - A brave Limpopo man is being celebrated as a hero after fearlessly hauling a leopard off a complete stranger and wrestling the big cat to the ground.

Lion-hearted Abner Mokone, 52, jammed his thumbs in the beast's mouth as they wrestled in the dirt, giving the stranger time to grab a sharp fence pole and stab the leopard to death.

Mokone, who is recovering in Tintswalo hospital in Bushbuckridge after his arms, hands and head were savaged, said he was having an afternoon snooze in his field in Gottenberg village last Friday afternoon when he heard dogs barking.

"I went to investigate and found a group of people who said the dogs were barking at a leopard," he said.

"Suddenly, a youth came running out of the bush screaming, with the leopard hot on his heels."

The beast lunged at the youth, landing on his back and pulling him to the ground.

Shocked spectators screamed and scattered in terror, but Mokone did not hesitate to go to the youth's assistance. "It was a matter of life and death," he said.

"It was either the young man, the leopard or me. The moment of truth had arrived, and I decided to be a man and do what I could," he said.

"When I looked into the eyes of that big cat, I thought about many things. I thought about my God, my ancestors and my family. The thought of dying gave me incredible power, and I eventually put my thumbs at the back of its mouth, stopping it from biting me anymore," he said.

The youth, a stranger in the area, then grabbed a fence pole and stabbed the leopard several times.

The youth has since disappeared without identifying himself and it is not known if he sought medical attention.

The leopard, which may possibly have escaped from the nearby Manyeleti game reserve, was taken to Mokone's home where it was skinned.

The Limpopo Tourism and Parks Board will deliberate whether to give Mokone a special permit to keep the skin.

Leopards are a protected species that cannot be hunted, either for trophies or skins, without permission.

A spokesperson for the National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA), Malcolm Woolmore, said while the leopard was killed in a terrible way, it was clearly a matter of life and death.

He said the NSPCA would approach Manyeleti to ensure its fences were in good order. - African Eye News Service

                            Very impressive stories.
I hope the guy gets to keep the skin.

                            I found this ironic

Doesnt it seem that any fence that can be ripped out of the ground by a youth is NOT "In good order"?

Hiker uses martial arts to fight off grizzly bear
                              May 30, 2005

Luckily, the bear didn’t have his black belt.

An Alberta man on a Bible retreat successfully used his Brazilian martial arts training on the weekend to fend off a charging grizzly.

Lyle Simpson was hiking through the bush with friends west of Calgary on Saturday when the bruin started chasing him, he said.

“It just burst out of the bush, charging right away. There wasn’t much time to think,” said Simpson, 32, who added there was a cub nearby.

The hikers quickly ran in different directions, but as Simpson was trying to escape, he tripped and landed on his back.

“I put my arm up as the bear was coming on down towards me. The bear tried to bite my arm.”

That’s when Simpson’s training instincts took over and he kicked the bear in the face.

“I think I stunned it just enough. I really think it saved me from a mauling.”

The friends quickly re-grouped and made the 15-minute trek back to Whispering Pines Bible camp.

Simpson needed six stitches to close the wound from the bear’s bite and has a painful gash on his hip.

“My shorts look like they’ve been cut with scissors.,” he said.

Man kills leopard with bare hands
                              June 23, 2005
                              From: Agence France-Presse

A 73-year-old man used his bare hands to tear out the tongue of a leopard that attacked him in Kenya and killed it, a newspaper said overnight of an incident confirmed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
The 73-year-old Daniel M'Mburugu was working in his potato garden near Mount Kenya in the centre of the country when the animal, apparently aggressive, hurtled from nearby grass and charged towards him.

"It let out a blood-curdling snarl that made the birds stop chirping. I froze for some seconds, then it dawned on me that death was staring at me on the face," he told the Standard Newspaper.

M'Mburugu, a peasant farmer, dropped the machete he was carrying and forced his hand into the leopard's mouth, pulling out its tongue in an act of self-defence, according to the report in the daily.
                              Advertisement:

"A voice, which must have been from God, whispered to me to drop the panga (machete) and thrust my hand into its wide open mouth, I obeyed," he said, explaining that the leopard sank its teeth into his wrist, but would not let go.

As the struggle continued, M'Mburugu realised that the animal's "breathing was belaboured", prompting him to keep pulling the tongue.

Villagers only responded when the animal lay dying and he gained instant status as a village hero, the paper said.

"Wardens said the leopard attacked the man because it was injured elsewhere ... wild animals are usually very aggresive and attack unprovoked when injured," KWS spokesman Edward Indakwa said.

"Nevertheless, he was lucky," he added of the incident that occurred early this month.

Incidents of human-wildlife conflict in the east African nation are common, mostly near game parks and national reserves.
