  • "Medium-contact" -- is it possible?

I did some Karate with no contact, and I would like to try something to give me more feel of a fight, not only touches. But on the other hand TKD classes I took in the university were too much contact -- I'm closer to thin than muscular and we were using no gear, so I didn't enjoy that.

Is there any middle ground? Schools or styles that offer some contact but not full-contact? I would definitely not like being the only one in a group to wear protective pads...

Ummm... Ok I never thought I'd say this,

In muay thai most everyone wears pads... maybe Muay Thai would be easier than your TKD?

If your a beginner and your sparring with people of your same rank, your going to get hurt. White belts are always the most dangerous when sparring. Find someone that really knows what they're doing, and spar with them. Sure it may sound scary to spar a 3rd or 4rth degree when your a beginner, but these are the guys that know what level you can take. They will allow you to work everything you have, and will be able to take it easy on you at the same time. Are you still studying martial arts?

Currently not, since I've moved away from my former "dojo" (which was a nice 5-minute warmup run away from my home), and there's nothing else near... But I still like MA and will definitely continue in the future.

But won't they be too bored to spar with me? After all, they probably could anticipate my moves before I think of them...

No. They should practice defense and movement, and refine their techniques. No matter who you spar, there is always something to be learned if you use the time properly, as a learning experience.
