I tried out a new dojo today and the way they do Judo is actually gentle.
They say the way they train is similar to pre-WW2 Judo, before weight classes.

Is it possible to have effective Judo that doesn't require a tremendous amount of strength and speed, but rather relies on deception and timing? By effective, I am talking about in the context of a martial art first, sport second.

I know that is what Jigoro Kano intended for Judo to be, but all of the Olympic Judo stuff seems to require a lot of muscle and power; and it seems to come with a lot of injuries. The way they practice Judo at this dojo removes a lot of the injury potential and also emphasizes technique over strength.

Does anyone have any experience with what I am talking about?

It kind of reminds me in a way of BJJ.... Some BJJ players use a lot of force and power to do their techniques (Jacare), but a lot of the very, very good top guys (Marcelo Garcia for instance) just have uncanny finesse.

Yes, it is often the Judoka with the best tricks that wins a match.

    Some...

Nice to read about Judo Dojo not stressing Olympic style judo. Wonder if they play with sticks too?

Thats the way it should be. Any school that thinks you NEED to use force for the techniques to work isn't worth going to.

There are 3 steps in the learning cycle for martial arts.
      Conditioning
      repetition
      observation

First you have to be in good physical and mental condition to learn martial arts.
Then you have to go over movements and techniques many times to learn them by rote (muscle memory). Problem is many schools mix these first two steps together which should not ever be done. If you start using the repetitive parts as your conditioning you'll start doing sloppy technique. Eventually your body will have the muscle memory to only do sloppy technique, unless you conciously think about it. The goal is to be able to execute perfect techniques unconciously.

It sounds like you have a good school there. Hopefully they do make you exercise and get in good physical conditioning before continuing on with the repetition part. But that can also be done at home, or before class on your own time. The observation part comes later through interaction with your class. You'll start picking things up quickly and then the cycle starts all over again.

to have effective judo u have 2 spar....and spar n spar like crazy and drill drill n drill like crazy.Get the technique down then try it against progressive resistance then in full sparring, that's the only way judo can be effective, lots of people musscle technique because its hard to use just technique against high level opponents or opponents of your own level.

quick question.... as relating to the "spar spar spar"... comment...

When you Judo guys spar do you end when one guy gets chucked on the ground or what...

May seem like dumb but I know Judo involves groundwork in varying degrees... just wondering if you have to finish it, or just pitch em and your done.

Depends on the training. Some days you work a particular throw or throws and start over each time to get the entry and attachment down. Or you might be working restraint techniques, or chokes or locks... or not.

If they bounce from the impact it's usually over.

sort of makes following them to the ground unnecesary if they do survive it a stomp to the proper target usually suffices to end the problem

i did read the post...Tanto1 pointed out a properly executed throw was usually a fight ender...i just agreed and pointed out there is nothing wrong with a little insurance sorry if i stepped on your fingers that could be a career ending injury to a fellow E-badass.
