What's aikido like? Is it highly effective? I heard it's basically jujitsu without strikes?

There are strikes in Aikido. It is an art that works your mind as well as your body, and takes a lot of time and dedication to be able to perform the techniques effectively. But once you learn the techniques, some would argue that there is nothing more effective.
Aikido is something to get into if you like Martial Arts for the art, not sport.

dude, go to barnes and Noble or borders, go to the martial arts section and read a book or at least look at the pictures. then decide for yourself if it's effective.
Just because it's effective for someone else doesn't mean it will work for you.
Just because it doesn't work for you doesn't mean it won't work for someone else.
All arts get bashed. All Styles get bashed. ask 100 people and you will get 100 opinions.
You will never learn what is effective from asking on a forum.

Well, I live in a bad part of Kansas City. I have been attacked on the streets numerous times(and come out unscathed only once). Using Aikido I was able to disarm an attacker using a knife. He lunged at me with his arm, I dodged, grabbed his arm and side stepped while shifting my weight to my left. I threw him to the ground and got out of there.
