when you take a style extract methods and stances from it, and produce a new style from it but leaving out vital stance holding and other fundemental methods,
i was training with a cage fighter a few days ago and he has been training for 30 years or so,
i am only 21 and he askes me "what is that your doing"
i said "horse stance, why?"
he said back to me "i have never heard of that teach me it quickly and what is so good about it"
i said back to him "ok copy my stance and hold it for aslong as you can while i time you"
he said back to me "alright here goes"
then he done it for 2 mins 40 seconds, and he has been training for 30 years,
he said back to me " wow that was hardwork howlong can you hold it for"
i said back to him "oh around 12-14 mins depends on ym condition that day"
that is what i mean by watered down and leaving out main fundemental simple methods, it happens with all of the modern styles they leave out some really good methods, and simple ones to like stance holding.
So what you are saying is horse stance has its uses? What the hell are they other then having a really open stance so that you can't move quickly to evade anything. How can a stance that leaves your most vulnerable area so open for attack be anything but bad.
Conditioning eh... So learning to stand in a static stance so that your legs arent moving is good... How can you not see the stupidity there?
Not every martial art came from China... Its not like every other nationality was too stupid to design an unarmed fighting style. I am pretty sure fists were used before anyone even knew what china was..
Gong Fu you have to word things correctly, watered-down actually means diminished in force or effect, now that is not what you mean is it? Im sure what you meant to say was they 'extract'.
Now Shadow killer what he means is that horse stances have conditioning purposes, they increase strength and indurance to the thigh muscles, nobody in thier right mind would use it as a fighting stance, not even Gong Fu.
Yes not every art came from China but most are developed FROM traditional Chinese Arts.
Im just getting fed up with his generalizations. He is obviously biased and thinks he can kick everyones ass... It just gets a little tiresome. No offense meant Gong fu.......
You can hold horse stance for 12 minutes without standing up? How low are you going? Can you back up this claim?
12-14 minutes in a proper horse stance isnt a superman feat...if you think it is you havent pushed yourself during static posture training yes you have to work on it daily, and increase time held gradually but 12-14 minutes certainly isnt unbelievable.
i will grant you wont find that kind of dedication often, but it definatly exists.

good work gong fu
Absolutely, I know it can be done. I also know how hard it is to hold it for 5 minutes; it takes a lot of dedication just to get that far. I could be wrong about this but I think the record for horse in our school is around 11 minutes. That's what made me ask; IMHO 12-14 minutes is pretty damned impressive. I'm skeptical, but if he (or anyone else for that matter) really is that good at the traditional stances his forms must look amazing. I'd sincerely enjoy seeing someone like that demonstrate a form- even if I was only able to watch it on my cpu.
I made the mistake of having a contest to see who could hold a horse stance the longest. 30 minutes later I still had 4 students standing there and at 45 minutes I still had two. so much for my idea of thinking that they would be whining after 5 minutes.
I learned right there not to underestimate the buggers.

Um... you're posts are usually very well thought out and informative but this is extremely hard for me to believe. I think we must have different standards when it comes to horse stance.
