If you are looking for something more "martial" then you might do better if you looked into a school that teaches Jujitsu (Small Circle, etc.) or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. There are several in the Boston area.

Let me say just one thing about Judo... Yeah, it's a "sport" and big fun to be sure.
Try to keep in mind the mutual welfare and benifit of your training partners, competitors and teachers when you play.
When you fight it's up to you to decide the level of force. You don't need to break arms or choke out a shoplifter but you might want lock out the arm if it's holding a weapon?
Or destroy it, it's all about having options.
a good player is not necessarily a good fighter but you will get from judo exactly what you put into it, and maybe more.

What they are saying is Judo is a sport. It is generally universally taught as a sport. Judo players consider themselves playing a sport.
It just happens that this sport can give you a lot of advantages in self defense. But it would be rare to find a self defense Judo school. That is just not what they teach.
They teach the game of judo with it's rules and its application for competition.
