  • Aikido B.S.

I was thinking about taking Aikido and was told by several people that it is b.s. Ive been grappling since I could walk so I thiught it was a good time to try something new. Is Aikido a practical martial art for MMA? Could I incorporate it bjj and wrestling.

There are, depending on the quality of the school and the instructors...a few quality concepts and ideas...but BJJ, judo, shooto, CSW, jj, greco roman, collegic, or any OTHER type of grappling art is going to be 1000% times better, and geared towards actual encounters.

    wu-tang...world wide.

A lot of the aikido out there is pretty crap. But it's worth trying shin shin toitsu aikido (ki aikido). Although it's not really about hurting people, the principles you learn through it benefit every aspect of your life and would therefore help with MMA etc. indirectly.

Aikido is a good form of de-escalation when a fight is about to start. As a fight progresses it seems less effect since you get adrenal dump and can't pull off fancy stuff as well. This is just my opinion. I'm sure there are security personnel out there who may be able to say otherwise.

Training in ki-aikido = no adrenaline dump.
The training is aimed at developing ability to stay calm yet positive in all situations.

Are you saying you don't think that ki-aikido practitioners experience an adrenaline dump in high-stress situations?

I heard about a guy named Chris Patrelli (sp?) who is supposed to have combined eskrima with aikido. Heard it was pretty effective but I've never seen it

Aikido, as i know it, is extremely effective don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Anyway, the martial art does not set the quality it is the martial artist.

                      aikido is very usefull.and affective
but i dont find it as a style
its like a good technuiqe or a good skill to know
its not much of an art ,but its very good for quick incounters
                      id take it

I think its good to have one "panching and kicking" MA and one grappling MA. Akido I found to be a little weird though, still it would certinly improve your close quarters combat skills.

Aikido like every other MA isn't a complete art, it can complement just about any other art in almost any area. Whether it be techniques, life in general or even work. Again it all depends on what you want to gain from it.

I have been training Aikido for 2 years now and have a back ground in others arts and have found that Aikido has enhanced my training in the other arts.

It also depends on what "style" of Aikido you are training in as fanman said Ki Aikido focuses on the bodys cultivation of Ki (energy) in the implemantation of the art, Yoshinkan is more of a "harder" "style" that focuses on the pre war Aiki Budo. These are only 2 "styles" of many that are out there.

So I supose if your want to use Aikido to enhance your MMA skill then yes I beleive it will but maybe not in the way you think it will.

                            Cheers

The harder style being strong towards Aiki-jutsu?
