my advice...avoid engaging him if you don't have an ample sense of humor and humility.

Everyone here has a tendency to bust each other's balls from time to time...he's probably just checkin' you out to see if you're worth responding to intellegently. That's how he works...he tends to conserve intellegent responses to people he thinks deserve them...and only occassionally in that case.
