  • Karate Schools & Grappling?

Are most Karate schools now days adding grappling/groundfighting to their classes?

If so,what's their approaches to teaching it? Are most using the "sprawl and brawl" method(Mo Smith) where the focus is on learning counter-grappling or escapes from the ground so as to continue striking? I actually think that approach would be better for general real life self-defense even for grapplers because of the problems that can come with being on the ground(multiple attackers, concrete, easier escape etc).

all depends on the school and the people who are teaching.

however, theres a good chance that it may be real crude or watered down compared to the training you will receive from training in an actual grappling discipline. depends on the teacher though. personally, i want to learn each range from a specialist who has dedicated himself to mastering that range. i want to learn grappling from a judo/jiu jitsu blackbelt or champion wrestler, i want to learn striking from from boxer etc.

I was wondering if most Karate instructors nowdays were able to adequetly teach some aspects of grappling? Have enough been trained well enough in grappling to pass it on to their students or do most have to bring in a grappling expert to teach their students? When I took TKD my instructor touched on some Judo throws with us but this was only because he had already taken some Judo before getting into TKD.

Well there is a difference between "taking some" judo or bjj and mastering it. Especially when it comes to the grappling arts you want to make sure that your instructor is covering the finer points of the techniques. If you don't learn techniques properly and you don't get the proper attention to detail that someone who has mastered it can provide, then you will probably end up doing the technique ineffectively. You will most likely try to power threw techniques, in turn potentially hurting your training partners. As far as the aspects of training, the whole "counter-grappling" idea is just a marketing ploy, if you want to learn how to defend takedowns, and to continue to strike, go to an MMA school where you can actually practice doing it.

Like Emptyness said, if you want to learn grappling, learn from a grappler. It works vice versa as well, you wouldn't go to a BJJ school to learn Karate would you?

I found karate to be very light at grappling. don't get me wrong they do use it, but they use it to enhance their punch and kick combos.
