the swords many ways

id like to hear your guys opinion on somthing.my master was telling me of how he got started into kendo and kenjtusu styles,and he said him and his buddy started just screwin around with swords when the were tuning teenagers,now my master persued the life of art,but his buddy just trained him self ,now aperently his buddy got very good,and beat my masters master in there youth with just the way he tought him self.now this rasied a question in my mind.if one can use a sword good ,well and all that stuff,is it worthy to be a art /style/whatever? like would it be wrong of him to then call him self a swordsmen?

i think tht as long as it isn't completely ridiculous and is idk like useful i gues then its fine to call yourself a martial artist
