  • Go Ju Ryu breathing and Kata's?

I notice that when I see Go Ju Ryu do some of there Kata's they take these deep breaths. What is the reason behind it. Just wondering.

I also was wondering, some of there Kata's or exercises, they do it with there musles really flexed (so it looks slow when they do it cause there using a lot of strenght). Why is that?

I been looking for another martial art, one that has good conditioning, healt, and self defence. Go Ju Ryu seems cool.

    Thanks.

As for the breathing, martial artists believe that "breath power" is the key to power and calibrating movements. A large focus is put on breathing for attributes like energy, explosive speed, generating power and focusing.

As for flexing muscles while performing kata, go look up dynamic tension. It will explain the whole theory and practice. If you're interested in Goju, you live in the right town. Some of the disciples of Master Urban(R.I.P) and Frank Ruiz are still in the city. You probably won't find finer Goju than that.

Well, judging by where your profile says you reside, I'll send you here:

        130 East 7th street
        (7th street corner Avenue A)
        2 flights up
        New York City

You'll get excellent goju instruction there as this man is a 1st generation student of Master Ruiz. He's well versed in many other arts as well. Take advantage of it all.
