  • Shotokan Applications?

Was anyone here ever taught any applications from Shotokan Karate that included throwing and joint locks?

If you check out the books and videos by Ian Abernathy, he shows quite a few applications from Kata that are locks and throws. While he doesn't do Shotokan (he does Wado-Ryu), I believe many of the kata are the same, or at least similar.

Wado is known for its Locks and throws also Ohtsuka never was instructed bunkai by Funakoshi Gichin, so I guess Abernathy does reverse enginered applications using Wado techniques

To be honest I have no idea where Ian gets his Bunkai from. Could be reverse engineered, or from others he's studied with. I like a lot of it though.

The "Practical Karate" series of books by Nakayama show a variety of applications of Shotokan including sweeps and locks. These are a series of books by Donn Draeger and Masatoshi Nakayama. I believe there are six books in the series.
