    Hey Ju, do you know...?

One of my favorite Sumo was Akebono, a Hawaiian native. (Chad Rowan)

Also the first non Japanese to become a grand champion! He was awesome!

What became of him? It's been a few years...

    Thanks.

Yeah, Konishiki should have made Yokozuna but was robbed. Akebono's big weakness was always his weak knees. After retirement he did a few MMA-type fights, but it didn't go well. Don't know what he's up to now, probably back in Hawaii I suppose.

Sumo is no more silly than judo or boxing. I had a pretty immature attitude toward it until I actually watched some. Anyone with an understanding of the basics of martial arts will be able to see that what those guys do is pretty amazing. If you put aside the Western tendency to think it's just too goofy looking and really watch, I think you might see some stuff you like Uke.

THAT'S the problem Jibboo, he has no "understanding of the basics of martial arts" so all he can see is fat Japanese men in diapers.

Don't waste your time trying to convince him of his own ignorance.

I wish I knew more about Sumo so I could contribute.

Alot of it looks like its related to Judo or Greco.

Look into Sumai if you're interested. Its the older name for Sumo and some claim it was a more 'combat' oriented MA.

Dunno about that more 'combat' part though, it may just be some folks who want to dramatize things. I suppose that if you go far enough back, things were at some point less formal and ritualized than they eventually became.
